QUESTION:
The annex "family" continues some of their traditions in the annex despite terrible conditions and danger. What traditions would you do your very best to preserve despite trying times? Why? Try and be specific. For example, the "family" celebrated Hannukah with the menorah, but it was important to Anne to preserve the tradition of giving gifts, so she crafted her own.

Student #2I would want to keep having birthdays. It’s the time where everyone turns a year older, and it’s when you were born. I think that birthdays are important because it’s a day where you can feel special.
Responses to Student #2:
1.(#21) I did the same thing as you did. It is important to keep your birthdays, im mean its a special day for you.
2. 27 I agree with you. On your birthday you feel special. I think birthdays are overall more fun because they are way more spontaemeous than the same boring traditions on holidays each year. It's more fun to mix it up once in a while!
Student #3
I would preserve birthdays because you get a whole year older and everyone has one. You get a day that pretty much belongs to you. It is important to celebrate these days because when you age, you mature. You wouldn’t want to lose count either!
Responses to Student #3:
1. [#31] I definetly agree with you about birthdays because I mean it is the day you were born, and get older. And yea you don't want to lose count either!
2. (#23) I totally agree about the birthdays because it's a time to celebrate something that you might have brought into this and who can forget how old you are.
Student #4 I would keep Christmas and my birthday. My birthday is important to me because I turn one year older. Christmas is important too because of the snow and lights. It is also Jesus birthday.
Responses to Student #4:
1.(28) I would also keep my birthday and Christmas as a holaday, to even though my birthday isn't a holiday. Shristmas is importent but not because of the snow and lights, it's because it's Jesus's birthday. But I still agree with you.
2. (#29)I agree birthdays are special because it’s just your special day. This would also make a lot of sense because your celebrating you being born and alive, if I were in the annex then I would be there to save myself. I would with out a doubt keep Christmas alive it’s a great holiday the birth of my savior!
3. (9) I agree that we need to celebrate christmas to worship our savior. And its not only for the presents but its also a day to come closer togeather and i like the lights and snow.

Student #6 The holiday that I would try celebrating even in a bad time would be Christmas. I know this has been said a lot, but it is a very important holiday for me. Every year we drive by car to Philadelphia Pennsylvania, were all of my cousins and grandparents live. In the after noon, we play football with my cousins (if its not too cold!) then we come in and have a huge Christmas dinner that my whole family helps cook. Every person contributes a little to the dinner, and we create a huge feast! Since I have a ton of cousins, normally it is a little hectic around present time! Even without the presents and food, I would still like to celebrate time with family.
Responses to Student #6:
1. I tottaly agree I with Christmas I pick that too. With my cousins we go to my Nana's house and have a BIG feast, then on Christmas Morning we all sit down and open our presents. It would probly be hard to do that in the annex but its fun at my Nana's.
Student #7
If I had to try to keep a holiday or special time the same even in hard times it would probably be thanksgiving because it’s about giving thanks and I would be thankful to be alive and be taken care of by friend who care along with my family so I’d want to keep that tradition up so that we could be happy and thankful. Like in the annex how Anne gave out gifts to raise spirits, just thinking about my life with my family would be enough.

Student #9 I think that i would have to do christmas. It is really important for people not only to get gifts but ot worship there religion on what day theres is. And it is also important to come closer togeather with one another on such a holiday.
Responses to Student #9:
1. (6) I agree. Christmas is also part of my religion and I also feel that it is important to worship their religion even in bad times. I also think that family would come closer together in a situation like this.
2.I would continue to celebrate Christmas because it is my favorite holiday. The thing I like the best is getting gifts and all my family is together. #16
Student #10 I would keep the traditions of birthdays and Christmas. Birthdays are very important because you’re getting older. And Christmas is a religious holiday.

I would try to celebrate Christmas it is my favorite holiday. Christmas is the one holiday where everyone comes to my grandma’s house and we celebrate on Christmas Eve. We play games and have a huge polish feast. We always know that we are going to be having polish food so we don’t eat a lot during the day. Then on Christmas we go to my other grandma’s house it is very mellow and we have breakfast and open presents. It is so much fun.
Responses to Student #11:(#4) Christmas is my favorite holiday and I go to mt grandmas house for Christmas Eve too. Isn't your birthday important to celebrate?
1.
Student #12 I would keep the birthdays and Christmas tradition. Birthdays because it is a special day for you to turn one year older and you would get presents, but when your in the annex you might not get presents. Christmas because it is a important holiday because Jesus was born on that day.

Student #15--The one holiday I would keep alive for my family would be Christmas. This holiday is not only important in my religion but we have family traditions that complete the day. Every year I look forward to Christmas. Of course it would be hard, with no presents, but one tradition that might take our mind off it is our cake we make for Christmas Morning breakfast. We might be able to decorate using odds and ends like Anne did for the Hannukah presents. It wouldn’t be the same as every other year, but I know my family would make the best of it. We would make new memories and traditions.
Responses to Student #15: I agree. I also chose Christmas. I chose it because it is a religious holiday.

Student #19 If I had to be in the annex for a long time the holiday that I would try to preserve is my Birthday. It a special time for you and you don't want to forget it. Even if you don't get many presents it is still good to be celebrated. Another hoilday is Christmas, same with my birthday even if you don't get a whole lot of presents it still fun to celebrate. Also Thanksgiving, because its is a time for giving and the food is good. You might no have a nice plump turkey, warm mashed potatos and gravy on the side but in the annex you would have that so you would have to think of something else. I think that Anne kept doing Hanukah because its here religon, its the reason she locked up in the annex, its a part of her.

If I had to go into hiding and then I would try and do Christmas and thanksgiving. Because both of those events are important to me. Most of my family comes up and we have so much fun. Even if in the annex we didn’t have a lot of people it would still be fun. One reason why I think that they kept doing Hanukah was because its part of them being Jewish and it’s the reason why they have to go into hiding because the Nazi don’t like Jewish people. I would also try and do any birthdays like it might be hard to do the presents but you could like just wish them a happy birthday.
Responses to Student #20:
1. [#7] Ithink that Christmas is a good holiday to keep because it's a time to be happy and be with family and I also think that's important. I thnk that is the same with thanksgiving and I think that pretty much any holiday would be good just because you can celebrate them with other people like you said with family. I also agree with you saying that any birthday would be good because even though you said it would be hard with presents but also like you said it's at least the brightening of their day by saying "Happy Birthday."
Student #21 The tradition that I would keep up and running is probably the birthdays. I mean its your child getting a year older then what he/she was all ready. Even though christmas is my favorite holiday, I would try to keep the birthdays up and running. In the annex the holidays a priceless because these are the years they'll remember for a life time. Even if they dont want to remember them they will try and remember the special holidays.
Responses to Student #21:
1. [#24] I agree completely with the birthdays and having to cherish those moments they have as a family because you never know when the nazis will come and take you away, if ever.
Student #22:
If my family and I were in the secret annex, I think we would try to preserve Thanksgiving. This is a very important part of the year to us. On this day, family from out of state and country come to our house to eat and spend time together. Even though all our family wouldn’t be able to be together, and we wouldn’t be able to have as big of a meal as normal, it would still be good to eat and talk together a one big “family”
Responses to Student # 22:
(20) I agree that Thanksgiving is a time for family. That for my family Thanksgiving is a day where everyone comes around to be with each other. It would be very important I think for them in the annex to celebrate family because they’re like one big family. Also everyone is there and alive. So every family there isn’t separated like they would be in the camps.
Student #23 I would try and celebrate christmas, easter, someone's b-day or thanksgiving. This are all things that could bring joy to the secret annex. I think Christmas is the most important one because that is the day jesus christ was born on.
Responses to Student #23:
1. ~32~I didn't think about easter that would be a good one. You could hide things for fun and make people find them. It would be a good way to have fun.
Student #24
A tradition I would keep running would have to be birthdays. Even though my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving, birthdays are definitely more important than Thanksgiving. Birthdays are the time of the year to celebrate someone's existance in this world, and that is a time no one should ever have to forget.
Responses to Student #24:
1. I agree with every bit of this response. Birthdays are the most important holiday because if celebrates someones life.
2. #2 I totally agree with you. I love birthdays and it’s the day you celebrate when you were born. You also get gifts.

Student #27 A tradition I would want to keep would be birthdays. You get to celebrate someone else for a day and make them really happy. I love getting gifts for people on their birthday and seeing their reactions. It's also just really fun hanging out with them all day when they're so happy. The other holidays are important too, but I think birthdays are a little more fun because the things you do on birthdays can be totally spontaeneous, compared to the same tradition year after year.

Student #28 I would keep my birthday so I can celabrate it. I would keep Christmas to because it's Jesus's birhtday. I think every one should celabrate Christmas and I think it's fun to see what your gifts are.

If I could preserve any holiday it definitely be Christmas. I love Christmas and I think it’s just a magical holiday.
I know that Christ being born is the most important thing so I would want to celebrate it even if I didn’t have good gifts. It is a big deal at my house and it is the biggest Christian holiday and my family has every one together we may not be able to do that but we could at least make a feast and sign Christmas songs.

Student [#30] The traditions that I would continue would be Christmas, 4th of July, and the birthdays of the people I was staying with. I would continue Christmas because it is part of my religion. The 4th of July is another holiday I would continue because it represents the day America became free. The last holiday I would continue would be the birthdays of the people I would be staying with because my birthday is important to me and I’m sure it is important to the people I was with.
Responses to Student #30:
1. {11} I agree with you I would keep birthdays that is my favorite day besides Christmas. I also agree to keep Christmas because it is part of my religion. I love 4th of July too. That is an important holiday and I love it.
Student #31
Traditions that I would want to keep doing are definitely Christmas and Birthdays. I would want to keep doing them because Christmas is a very happy holiday that would cheer everyone up, and you should also celebrate your Birthday because it’s the day you were born!
Responses to Student #31:
1.[15] I totally agree with you, birthdays are very important. In my opinion, birthdays are not the most important holiday. Of course I love them, getting presents and all, but that’s all it basically is. To me, Christmas, like you said, is a big one. I would love to keep the Christmas spirit and traditions alive! I can’t wait until this Thanksgiving so I can be thankful for not being in such a terrible situation, and that I have my family here with me to celebrate these important things to me. If I was in the secret annex I would probably go crazy! I would, along with my family, try and make the best of it, even in hard times.

I would definitely keep Christmas because I love the spirit the Christmas holiday brings. I would just like Anne did find a way to give presents to the people living with me. Also Christmas songs are one of the things I really enjoy. I would want to sing lots of songs just like Anne as well. Then I would want to have a “feast” of better food then we had been eating. Also I guess I would like to keep birthdays in some way whether its just singing ‘happy birthday’ or getting spankings….haha.
