QUESTION

Today, I asked you to think about the following three terms:

*Prejudice – an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.

*Hate – to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward; detest.

*Stereotype – ideas held by some individuals about members of particular groups, based solely on membership in that group. They are often used in a negative or prejudicial sense and are frequently used to justify certain discriminatory behaviors.

1. What do you think these three terms have in common, or how are they linked?

2. Explain how these three terms relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

Student #2 Something that hate, prejudice and stereotype have in common is judging. I think that when people say they hate someone, they are judging them form what they look like to what they had heard about them. Same with prejudice and stereotype. Hate, prejudice, and stereotype relate to the Diary of Anne Frank because everyone said that they hated the Jews, but really they were just listening to what Hitler said about them.

Responses to Student #2:

1. (#19) I tottally agree with you about the hate and prejudice idea on how they hate someone there juding them about what they look like or their beliefs. I also made the same connection on them just listening to Hitler

2.

(28)I agree with you, I think all three of the words mean judging. I don’t think my definition is right. For when I hate someone it’s usually when they have been treading be badly. I agree with you again about what Hitler said about the Jews and that’s way they hate them so much.

Student #3

I think all those words have in common is that they are all hurtful words. If you hate someone that’s obviously bad. If you stereo type someone, that’s bad too. And prejudice is wrong because your sort of making an inference. All these words reflect how the Nazi’s thought the Jews were. They didn’t realize all people are equal.

Responses to Student #3:

1. 27 I agree, hate, prejudice and stereotype are all hurtful things to do. I also don't think the nazis or really anyone who wasn't a jew at that time thought jews were the same equal person as anyone else. That was definitely prejudice, and I think maybe the jews had a lot of prejudice against the nazis, who really didn't know any better. That was another stereotype!

Student #4 The things that hate, prejudice, and stereotypeing has incommon is that when someone does all those things they are judjing someone. All the hate, stereotyping, and prejudice has to do with The Diary of Anne Frank is that Hitler said all this stuff about the Jews that everyone started to jude them because of what one person thinks.

Responses to Student #4:

1.(3)I agree with you. I think the hatred between the Jews and the Nazis grew over time until it erupted into brutal murder.

Student #5

Responses to Student #5:

1.

Student #6 Prejudice, stereotyping, and hate are all linked. Prejudice and stereotyping occur before hate. It may begin as saying a certain group of people is stupid or ugly. But over time, it develops into something more. This happened in Ann Frank’s life. Stereotyping and prejudice was a key factor in the Anne Frank story. Some Germans stereotyped and prejudiced the Jews. Over time it turned into hate, which led to violence and the killing of many Jews.

Responses to Student #6:

1.(9) That is exactly what i think because the Franks wern't treated well. And they weren't treated equally. And ithink that the wrods all mean the same too.

(#4) I agree with both of you because the what one person thought and said turned into everyone hateing and killing the Jews.

Student #7I think that the three terms are related because they each have to do with judging people without knowing them. I think that that happens even if you don’t realize it and I think that hate has to do with stereotypes and being prejudice because if you don’t know someone and you think that you do then you could have a whole other impression of how they’re supposed to be and you could hate them for not knowing them. I think that this relates to the “Diary of Anne Frank” because the Nazi’s thought that all Jews were bad and they didn’t even know them so they started out with the wrong impressions and turned it into “The Holocaust” which evidently killed 6 million Jews.

Responses to Student #7:

1.(stdent#29)I agree that they were all linked. I think that if the Nazis didn’t have in their mind already set that all Jews were bad then the hate towards the Jews would have never been created. If there was no hate then 6million Jews would have never known the tragedy of the Holocaust.

2. [15] I agree, if Hitler hadn’t developed this hate there wouldn’t have been a Holocaust. Looking in the library I found all sorts of books on how the Holocaust affected people’s lives and suddenly these words came to mind. I flipped through one of the books and it talked about how they suffered. Hate came into my head. When they were sent left or right the Nazi’s were stereotyping them on how they looked. And just overall reading and seeing pictures you can see how prejudice the Germans were to them. It makes me sick how one human can treat another, based on race, religion, hair color, ect. The Holocaust was a tragedy.

Responses to Student #8:

1.

Student #9 I think that all of the words are related by the way they are described. They all talk about not treating people or things a very good way. The Franks weren’t treated like regular people, they were treated harshly. And people didn’t treat them like they did others.

Responses to Student #9:

1. Thats what i think. The words mean some people arnt treated like others becose of race, relegion, and etc. --#10

Student #10 If you are predjudus the you stero type. If you beleive the stero types then you hate. These relate to the Franks because the Nazis were hatful, predjudus, and sterotypical to all Jews.

Responses to Student #10:

1.

Student #11 Stereotype, prejudice, and hate are alike because they are both saying they don’t like this person for this one reason. It could be how they look the color of their hair the color of their skin and more. or you could be making comments about how they look and how they talk. They are related to the diary of Ann Frank because the Nazis picked on only the Jews because they did not have the same religion as they were. It was stereotype because they were discriminating against one group. It was prejudice because it was an opinion that they were different then everyone. The Nazis disliked t he Jews and they did not treat them with respect.

Responses to Student #11:

1. [#31]I agree with you about how stereotype, prejudice, and hate are all alike because they mean you don't like someone for a certain reason. I also agree it is related to the Diary of Ann Frank because the Nazis only picked on the Jews because they were different from the Nazis beliefs.

Student #12 I think that hate was Hitler hating the Jews and killing them for no good reason. Prejudice was the disliking of the Jews.

Student #14 I think that prejudice and stereotypes can lead to hate. If you quickly judge someone without getting to know them then you could be totally off. For all you know the person you think is breaking the law all the time might be the nicest person in the world.

Responses to Student #15:

1. -- All these things are related to how the Jews were treated. Hitler and the rest of his Nazis were totally prejudice toward the Jews. They didn’t take time to get to know them at all or find that you can’t just kill or hurt someone, let alone be mean to them if they are different than you. Today we even have laws about it. Each and every one of these Jews didn’t deserve to be treated like this, not at all. The Nazis hated them for what they celebrated, how they worshiped. Maybe not even that, for the color of their hair and eyes. By the way he treated them you could see how he felt. He couldn’t even see how much he was hurting them, both physically and emotionally. He was blinded by pure hate for these kind, innocent people. The last term Mrs. Schick asked us to think about was stereotype. Especially in middle school there is a lot of stereotyping that goes on. Without noticing we automatically group people into cliques such as jocks, nerds, and preps. Hitler stereotyped the Jews into all being the same, worthless bodies that take up space, which no one is. He was a cruel man, he made bad decisions and nice, innocent people like Anne suffered from it.

Student #19 Sterotype, Prejuide, and HATE all of something in commmon which is judging. I think when someone hates someone else it is for what they look like (sterotype) or their beliefs. If people just talked to them and I got to know them a little bit better maybe they would and notice how their just like you. I think they related to "The Diary of Anne Frank" because everyone said that they hated the Jews but they were actually listening to Hitler.

Responses to Student #19:

1. [#7]Yeah, I believe that all of the terms have in common and that it is Judging of others and I think that since Hitler was a very motivating speaker and everyone listened to him so they went against the Jews together.

2. [#30] I agree with what you said about judjing. Hitler stereotyped all the people he hated. You are right.

Student #20

Stereotype they stereotyped the Jews because maybe one Jew was rude then everyone thought that all Jews were rude. Something likes that where one person could do something and if they are in a group then everyone might think that everyone in that group is like that person. Prejudice Hitler had very good speech making skills. He convinced many people that Jews were bad. Even though I’m sure a lot of those people knew Jews and were friends with Jews. Maybe they didn’t even know really anything about Jews but since they heard it form Hitler that Jews where bad that they thought he must be right their not good. I think that the movie was really cool how they are trying to collect 6 million paperclips and they chose something that back then represented something. So its not like paperclips are some random thing that they’re collecting. I don’t think many people can imagine walking into the camps and seeing your family members for maybe the last time. Also being treated so badly. Not getting a lot of food and sharing a bed with 3 other people and the gas chambers I can’t really think about how it would feel like. The three Stereotype, Hate, and Prejudice are connected because if you don’t know someone but you hear something about them then you make a guess on which they are. You can either say I want to be their friend or I really don’t want to hang out with them. For instants if you meet someone from another school and they’re kind of bossy and rude then you might think hmmm their whole school must be like that to. I think that it could be that Hitler had one bad encounter with a Jew and might have thought all of them are bad.

Responses to Student #20:

1.(14) I agree about Hitlers speeches. I think that the people weren't too familiar with any Jews so they assumed Hitler was right. I don't agree about Hitler having one bad encounter with a Jew. This guy hated everyone but white people so I don't think one bad experience with a Jew is going to do that

Student #22

First off, I just wanted to say how terribly sad the Paper Clip movie was. It was incredible what the Germans put the Jews through, all because they were “different”. I think that prejudice, hate and stereotype have to do with Anne Frank in the sense that the Germans had each of these towards the Jewish people. They showed their hate by beating torturing the Jews, then sending them off by the thousands into further torture through the concentration camps. I am not very sure how they stereotyped them, other then they treated them different then everyone else. They definitely made sure that they (the Jews) stood out and were humiliated in public, but I don’t know if that would be considered a stereotype. During the war, over in Germany, Poland, etc, prejudice towards the Jews could be found anywhere and everywhere you looked. They were made to wear armbands with the Star of David on it, to distinguish the Jewish from the German. The Jewish were deprived of certain privileges and opportunities, such as shopping in certain places, going to public parks and swimming pools, and even sitting on public benches. The acts committed towards the Jewish, by the Germans, were unforgettable and unforgivable.

Responses to Student #22:

1.~32~ I know what you mean about the acts Germans took against the Jews. Personally I could never live through life knowing I had done such a horrrible thing. I know I will never forget about the Holocaust and the things people did and still do to others just because of hatred.

Student #27 Hate, prejudice and stereotype are linked because they are all related to someone being unfair. They are things that no one likes to be. Stereotype, hate, and prejudice are linked to "The Diary of Anne Frank" because the Jewish people were stereotyped as not worth anything. Anne proved that they are real people, just like any other person. Hate is related to "The Diary of Anne Frank" because in her story, the people she was living with seemed to hate the war and nazis, although she never said she hated anything in her diary. Prejudice is related to "The Diary of Anne Frank" because the nazis and Hitler were prejudice against the jewish population.

Responses to Student #27:

1.#2 I agree with you, I think that the Jews were being stereotyped because of what Hitler said and that the Jews were worth nothing. I also think that Anne did mean that the people she was living with “hated” the nazis and the war.

Student #28 I think hate is when the Jews were taken to the camps. I think the people that took the jews didn't know how they thought. They also were treaded badly and I think that was sad. I wouldent want to be treaded badly, either.

Responses to Student #28:

1. (6) I also think that the Jews were treated with hate when they went to the concentration camps. I also feel that I wouldn't want to be treated the way the Jews were.

2:{11}I agree with you that when the Jews were taken to the camps that was hate. I also agree with you that it is sad how they were treated and that they were killed just because they were Jews. I also agree that I wouldn’t want to be treated badly and be killed just because I believe in this religion.

Student #29

I think these terms are linked because stereotypes and prejudice people generate hate. Prejudice and stereotypes are very similar, in the sense that the are preconceived notions of groups of people without any or little background knowledge about a certain individual. But they don’t fall under your definition of ‘normal’ so you judge them on information that was fed to you by the general public that isn’t true or only applies to some of the people in that category. These terms are related to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because that is exactly what the Nazis did was stereotype that the Jews were bad and should be killed. They were also prejudice towards them making the Jews alienated. This created hate for them only because each individual Jew was a different person but they were all still judged by their religion not their character. So the hate Hitler had on them ended their lives.

Student #30 When people hate other people they will stereotype the people they hate. When people hate other people they are also prejudice.

Student #31

I think prejudice, stereotype, and hate are all alike because they mean you don’t like someone for one reason. I think stereotypes and prejudices are more linked together because they both mean you don’t like someone for the way you look or there culture. Hate is more like if you don’t like someone because they did something to you. I think these terms link to the Diary of Anne Frank because the Nazis were prejudice and a stereotype to the Jews because they had a different culture. And the Jews also hated the Nazis because of what they did to them.

Student #32

To me, if you stereotype someone you might be prejudice towards them and both of these decisions cause you to hate the person. In example maybe you hear something about a person so you make conclusions on how you feel about them. Then you begin to hate that person even though you don’t know them because of a decision you already made. Even though that doesn’t make lots of sense, I think stereotyping causes prejudice and both lead to hate. These things relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because the Nazis stereotyped and became prejudice to the Jews. Hitler in particular hated the Jews (Anne) and sent them to concentration. Stereotyping, prejudice, and hate lead to the holocaust.

Responses to #32:

1.

(20) I don’t think that all Stereotyping and Prejudice lead to hate because if you think of moms then you think of caring people who take care of kids and love then you might not hate that. It can lead both ways but I don’t think that it leads to hate all the time. But I agree on when you hear something about someone then you start to think about how you are going to look at them from now on like smart, bullies, and jocks

2.

(#22) I agree with you! I think that the prejudice and hatird the the Germans showed to the Jews, almost "gave them the idea" that they should punish the Jews by sending them to concentration camps, if thaat made any sense at all.I also think that if the Germans hadn't judged them and made assumptions before they actually knowing they're culture and people, I highly doubt that the Holocaust would've been brought on.
