QUESTIONS:
Here are a few quotes for you to consider. Read and think about them thoughtfully then craft a response regarding what they mean to you, what they make you think about, how they relate to you, etc.
1. In, "The Diary of Anne Frank," Anne states in Act II, Scene 3: "But ... and that is the great question ... will I ever be able to write well? I want to so much. I want to go on living even after my death."
2. Poet Martin Niemoller (1892-1984), wrote:
"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out;
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was not one of them, so I did not speak out;
Then they came for the Jews but, I was not Jewish so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."

Student #2I think that the quote from the Diary of Anne Frank means that she wants to be known even after her death. I’m not that sure what the second quote means but I think it means that if you don’t speak out for others, others will not speak out for you.

Student #4 I think that Anne's quote means that she wanted to be remembered after her death and that that she wanted people to learn about what it was like to be in hiding and what it was like to fear that if someone found you that you might die. I think that the second poem means if you stand up for your self and not for others that when something happenes to you noone will stand up for you. But if you stand up for people then if something did happen to you people would stand up for you.
Responses to Student #4:
1.(student#29) I agree I think what goes around comes around, if you stand up for other then others will stand up for you. If you coward in a corner then when you need help no one will be there for you. The passage written by Anne I also I agree with, she wanted to know that she lived and she wanted to stick out from all the others with a story she wanted people to know the horror and the way she lived in fear
2. #2 I agree with you. I think that the first quote means she wants to go on living even after her death. I also agree with you about the second quote. I think that if you don’t stand up for someone, they wont stand up for you.
2. {27} I agree that Anne definitely wanted people to learn from her experience trying to live through the holocaust. I think she also really wanted to be remembered as someone who could inspire you and give you hope if you needed it. I think the second quote is completely true about standing up for others.

Student #6 I think the quote from Anne’s play means that she wants her entries to be remembered after her death. She wants people to learn about the holocaust from her diary, and to feel what it was like to be in hiding. I feel that her wish came true. She does keep on living every time you read the diary. When you read her diary, it feels more than a learning experience or for entertainment, but it gives you one of the greatest true life stories ever. You truly do feel what Anne, Peter, the Franks, the Van Dans, Margot, and the Franks were thinking, and that I believe was Anne’s dream; to show her story to the world. I think the second quote means that if you want to protect your rights, your freedom, you have to protect others rights and freedom. So that when you are singled out and prosecuted for what you believe, others will stand up and fight for you. But if you don’t, if you ignore them and say it won’t affect me, then no one will be there for you when you face pain and loss.
Responses to Student #6:
1. #23 I agree with the fact that her entries to be remembered afeter her death. Also I agree with the fact that her wish came true.
2. [#18] I agree with both of you on the fact that she wants her entries to be remembered long after her death. I also agree with you both about how what she wrote in her diary about how she wanted to live after her death, became very true.
Student #7I think that Anne got what she wanted and that her story will live on for a long time to come and I think that she was remembered after her death because her diary entries were so heartfelt and understood that it didn’t matter whether she could write or not it was what each entry meant. I think that the poem means that she person did not “Speak Out” for what they believed in and everyone else before them didn’t speak for what they believed in so I think that it means that when they came for the person that they had to believe and stand up for what they really want and care about.

#9 I totally agree with you about Anne. Her story is very heartfelt and will live on for forever. But I didn't get the second one but that dose make sense to me.
Student #8 I think Anne’s wish came true, because she has lived on past her death. So many people know her story and it means a lot to them. She lives on in other people’s hearts. I’m not quite sure what the second part means. I may just not be smart or something.
Responses to Student #8:
1. [#7] I don't think that your not smart about the second part I think that you just need to search for a deeper connection. I also think that Anne's wish did come true on past her death and that she still lives on in other people's hearts.
2. I agree with you on anns quote. I think the second quote means save others and you will be save.--#10
Student #9 I think that Annes dreams have come to life. She has lived on to this great thing, and i truly think that if she never had her entries shown to the world, if she would have never been brought back up, then we wouldn;t know so much about the holocaust today. We wouldn't have know how she felt, what it was like to stay hidden for such a long time, or what it was like to not have friends or family that were so far away frome you not be able to see you anymore, I think that Anne Frank has changed the whole worlds veiws on the holocaust. And her dream will live on forever, from generation to generation, teaching them, showing them what the holocaust really was a little bit more. I don;t understand the second poem though?
Responses to Student #9:
1. /19/ I tottaly agree with 100% about Annes dreams coming true and how her story is living but she is already dead. Also about how Anne Frank changed the views of the holocust for the world. The second poem was confusing and I just guessed :0.
Student #10 In Anne's quote she said she wanted to live after she died. And she did. People still alk about here and eveyone knows about her. In Poet Martin Niemoller quote she basicly said she spoke out to no one because she was not them. Then when she needed help no one spoke out for her because she did not speak out for them.
Responses to Student #10:
1.(28)She did live on after she died. I think people still talk about here. I agree when she did not speak she was not one of them.
Student #11 I think that the first quote is saying that she wants people to know about her after she dies like when she goes to the concentration camps and gets gassed. I think it relates to me because I want people to remember all the good times I had with them after I die. The second quote I really don’t understand but I think that he is saying is that you cant let someone talk for you have to speak up for yourself. It makes me think that you should not just sit back and not say anything you should speak out and have a voice. I really don’t know how it relates to me yet.

I think Anne wanted people to remember her diaries so they could know what it was like and never forget what happened. The other guy stayed quiet when everyone else was being persecuted but when it was finally his turn no one was left to speak out for him.

I think Anne’s quote means that she wants people to know about, and read her entries from her diary, long after her death. I think she wants people to know about what she went through in hiding and in the concentration camps, and for people to get all of this out of her descriptive writing out of her diary. All she wanted was to be a good writer, and for people to know her story. And that’s definitely what she got! I think the second quote was about a guy who didn’t speak up for anyone when they needed help, but expected everyone to help him, in his time of need. But by then, everyone was gone. I think the point he was trying to get through was that in order to receive help from others when you need it, you have to help them first.
Responses to Student #18:
1. (#4) I agree with everything you said because everyone knows Anne Franks story and its been 60 Years. I also think the second quote means if you what people to help you then you have to help them first.
Student #19 I think that Anne's wish came true. Her story is remembered by many people. If she never wrote the diary or her father never found it, how would know about the story of 2 familes living in hiding for almost 2 years and how they surivied. Also we wouldn't know a lot about the holocust. Also this doesn't really relate to me execpt that I'm not good at writing and I'd like to be better. I think that the second poem could mean that like communism is a group so when they looked for communists she was one so she didn't say anything but when they found her (one person not one group) there was know one to speak for her.
Responses to Student #19:
1. (6) I agree with you that without Anne's diary, we would not understand or know a lot about the holocaust. I dissagree with you about the second poem. I feel that this means that if you do not help others with protecting their rights, then no one will be there for you when you need to protect your rights.
Student #20
To me the poem was about how when all these people where in trouble how he didn’t stand up for them then when it was his turn to go no one wanted to help him or there was no one left to help. Also on how sometimes people are afraid to speak up and say what they think is right. I’m sorry to say that if I lived back during WW2 I don’t know if I would speak up and say this is wrong. Because like we said in class sometimes fear has different reactions. Hitler had a great way of getting people to join him because not only was he a great speech maker but last year my Social Studies teacher told us how I think if someone spoke they would get beat up where everyone could see them or something. So it’s like if you speak up or go against me then this could happen to you. I think that’s how my teacher explained it. I think a lot of people knew it was wrong but didn’t want to go to the camps and so they didn’t say anything. I think what Ann is trying to say is that she wants to write things that are important and that people years from now will look back at her writing and read it. Or she wants to write something that would change the way that some people think.
Responses to Student #20:
1.(14) I definitely agree with you, I know I would have been scared to speak up.

I think that the quotes relate to me in the way that I don’t always speak out when I see something going on, that I know is wrong. I mean, sometimes, I may see someone being talked about and I wouldn’t say anything. Or I may see someone being left out, and I would not go over and work with them or join them. I think this is because I am, not afraid, but just to conscious of what people will think if I go work with someone who isn’t “popular” or that doesn’t have all the cool friends. I should not worry about what people think of me. It does not matter what other people think of you. All that matters is what you think of yourself, and that you do what you know is right. If you know that a certain person is having a hard time with something (school, home, family) and you don’t ask if there’s anything that you can do to help, then I think that that is a flaw on your part. If you think that, there is something that you can do to cheer them up, or make them feel better, even if you just ask or say, hi to them, that even helps. I remember, when my dad first left, and people would ask me how I was and if they could help, even if there wasn’t anything, it made me feel a lot better, just knowing that they know what’s going on and that they cared. If you see something going on that you do not think is right, then you should not be worried about what other people will think of you. You should be focused on what is going wrong and what you can to do get it fixed. If it is a person you’re trying to help, don’t be concerned whether they’re cool or not. Just humble yourself enough that you are able and willing to help them out and to try to make them get through their tough time as easily as possible. Think of it as if it were you. Would you want someone to help you, even if you are not “cool enough”? Would you want someone to let you know that you care and that you want to help you? I think so.
Responses to Student #22:
1. [#31]I totally agree with you on how I see other people being left out or not having a partner and I don't go talk to them, and I feel really bad about it. And I agree with you on if it was me I would wnat someone else to come work with me or talk to me.
2. The second paragraph makes more sense now from what u explained thanks! (8)
3.~32~You are definitely right about speaking out and helping others. I feel the same way about helping others too because I don't want to be seen with the person and I really shouldn't care. Also, I think if you do speak out for someone and your friends "reject" you because of it those "friends" aren't really your friends.
4.
(20) Yeah I agree that a lot of people don’t do stuff because they are afraid of what people would think of them. Also when you said that even a little think can cheer someone up. Like just saying hi or in the Paperclip movie just collecting paperclips that represented something and teaching kids about what happened. They got all those letters from people who where happy that they wanted to help the kids reach their goal.
Student #23 Her quotes both in fact become reality because every time you read the book her memories and feelings fly right off of the page. Also, she explains what it is like hiding for roughly 2 years. When you read it you think it is a book of entertainment or fun but in fact it was about the horrid and great times in hiding.

Student #27 The quote that Anne Frank wrote relates to how she does not want to be forgotten because so many jews were forgotten in the holocaust. She might have somehow known she would probably end up in a concentration camp, and did not want her life and beliefs to be forgotten with everything else forgotten. I think the second quote means that if you don't stand up for the people in your life, when you need someone to stand up for you they won't be there in the sense that they probably wouldn't have the courage to stand up for you either since they have nothing to be inspired by to do that.

Student #28I think the first quote came true, Anne Frank did live after her death. I also want to become a good writer like Anne wanted to. The second quote I did not really get to much, so I don’t know what to say.
Responses to Student #28:
1. I agree with you 100%, but I don't want to become a writer. I also don't have a clue about what the second part means.
Student #29
To me the poem by Martin Niemoller meant that just because you are not the one or your ‘group’ isn’t the one being treated unfairly or unjust does not mean you shouldn’t defend them because when the haunters come for you if you previously backed people up then you will be spoken for. But, if you don’t stand up then you will get the rotten half of the deal. The expression, what goes around comes around comes to mind. To me the passage written by Anne Frank, the particular part, “I want to go on living even after my death” means that with each word she wrote you can feel her soul almost like you knew her not like she is another one of the 6million Jews that died. She’s not just a girl who suffered she’s the girl we all knew with every drop of ink on the page is just us getting closer to this girl who had fears, dreams and hopes much like all of us.

The first quote did come true because when she said she wanted to keep living even after her death, she did because people read her diary and still talk about her so she still is living after her death in books, and when you talk about her. What I think about the second quote is it is true if you don’t stick up for, or don't help other people then there won’t be anyone there to help you.
Responses to Student #31:
1. {11}I agree with you because she did keep living after her death threw her diary. I kind of agree with you that you have to stick up to yourself or you don’t help anyone out there wont be people there to help you out. I guess that makes since to the second quote but I really don’t understand that quote.
Student#32
To me Anne has definitely gone on living way after her death and I know she will continue to live on. Her quote reminds me of people getting awards after they are dead and just like Anne become famous after they died. I can’t say she relates t me in a lot of ways except for the fact that I would like to be a better writer. The second quote by Martin Niemoller means if I don’t fight for others now there will never be others to support for me. This makes me think of how when you see people “bullying” others you should stand up for them and how I can do better.
