Question: How are the games we play and the text connected?

Connect the text with our games. Make as many connections as you can, and explain them enough so that we can understand your idea. Remember how it felt to play. What you were thinking about? What were you pretending? And then connect this to the text.

Here are a list of games that we've played so far (please note that some have been played more than one time):

Name Yourself/Name Tag (yellow star, fur coat, clock face)

Gibberish

Kitty Wants A Corner

Black Magic

HERE'S A BIG HINT...THERE ARE A MILLION CORRECT ANSWERS. IT IS LIKE THAT WHEN WE ANALYZE LITERATURE. YOU JUST HAVE TO BE WILLING TO PROVE YOUR POINT.

Student #1 I'm pretty sure that the star represented the jewish peaple and the clock meant what time Anne could move around. I think that kitty in the coner was to represent what it was like for Anne before they moved into the shop. She was able to run around without anyone bothering her. Black magic was when they moved into the house and she was confused about it. Like she couldn't go down stairs.

Responses to Student #1:

1. (Student #12)- I had alot of the same thoughts on the games that you had. I also thought the clock represented when you can move around and how the game Black Magic was confusing jusy like how Anne was confused.

Student #2 As we were playing Black Magic in class today I was very frustrated because I couldn’t get how he kept guessing the right object every single time! But then after a while I figured out how he was guessing and it all made sense to me. I think it relates to the story because living in the house without knowing what’s going to happen would be very frustrating!

Responses to Student #2:

1. I agree that it would also be frusterating living in a house without knowing whats going to happen. (7)

Student #3

In the game "black magic" i thought the it related to the text because not very many people got it just like not all the people in annn frank got why they had to hide. in the game "kitty wants a corner" i thought it related to the text because the people upstairs had to sneek around and try not to be caught by the police. each time i made it accross safely i felt releived.

Responses to Student #3:

1. I agree with you on kitty in the corner, they had to hide to live safley and not get caught. (16)

Student #4

Playing Kitty in the corner related to Anne Frank because the Jewish had to run around/sneak and make sure the Germans didnt find them! I think Black magic related to Anne Frank because I think she was confused at the begining and didnt know what to think of it. When we got the name tags I thought that the star could represent the Jewish star, the fur coat would proabably be her mothers coat, and maybe the clock represented the amount of time that Anne and her family/friends had to hide.

Responses to Student #4:

1. I was a little untill I figured what the clue was.#13

Student #5 ****In kiddy wants your corner, you had to sneak around and not let another person steal your spot. In the text,Ann and her family need to sneak around and not get found by the Germans! I also think the tags ment a lot to the text! The star represented the Jews. The fur coat was the one that the other mom wore. And the clock represented when the Franks could move around upstairs!****

Responses to Student #5:

1. #1*** I agree, I also think that the stars represented jewish people and the clock meant when anne could move about.

#3~~~i kinda figured out that the stars represented the jewish but i think you might be rite about the other tags too.

Student #6In the game black majic most people were very confused just like young kids probably were in the times of Anne Frank. They didn't know why they were moving to a new country or why they were not aloud to move around during the day. In the game Kitty in your corner I think It related to the story because Jews were trying to make sure the Germans didn't see them leaving the country.

Responses to Student #6:

1. I agree with you about balck majic and the ann-frank connection.#13 I agree but I didn't see that before!#5

.I Had never thought of that connection to Black Magic!!! Great point! (30)

Student #7I think the game kitty in the corner related to Anne Frank because the Germans were trying to get the Jews and throw them in concentration camps. I think the game Black magic related to Anne Frank because the Germans had to guess were the Jews were .I think the star represented the star of David .I think the Brown coat was the coat that the other lady wore . I also think the clock meant when Anne and the other people were able to move about.

Responses to Student #7:

1. I almost forgot about the camps! I think that might be true! (4)

Student #8The things we put our names on represented things in the book. The star that we made represented what the Jewish people had to wear. The fur coat represented the layers of clothing the people had to wear when traveling into the upstairs of the work building. The clock showed the times they could move around and the times they couldn’t. In the game, Black Magic, people felt frustrated and wanted to know what the secret was. In the book, Anne Frank was frustrated, because she wanted to be able to be treated like everyone else. She didn’t like that she couldn’t go out of hiding to even get a pen. I felt like it wasn’t fair that some people got the secret and others didn’t.

Responses to Student #8:

1. In my responce I didn't think about our name tags but you bring up a very valid point!!! Plus I agree with you on us being frustrated in the Black Majic game.#-006-#

2. Although I had different responses between the game and the story, I think that your connections were also really good. I agree with your connections between the name tags and Anne Frank. I also thought it wasn’t fair that some people got the secret and others didn’t. (21)

I think the connection between the game “Kitty want a corner” and the story of “Anne Frank Diary” is that when the kitty in the game isn’t looking the other people switch spots and when the Nazi’s weren’t looking the Franks went into hiding. The connection between Black Magic and the Anne Frank Diary the objections was too decisive the other people. In “Anne Franks Diary” the Franks were trying to decisive the Nazis. The game “Kitty wants your corner” I felt kind of happy inside, but in the game “Black Magic” I felt really annoyed.

Student #12 I believe that the star name tag represented the star that was sewed onto all of the Jewish people’s clothes. The fur coat represents the little clothes they got to bring from their old home. I think the clock represented the times Anne’s family and friends were allowed to do things. Black Magic was a confusing game, just like Anne must have been confused about the rules she had to follow. Kitty in the Corner was just like Anne and her family having to run from the Nazis.

Student #13The shapes that we used in class to put are names on where a little ideas to what would br in the story. I think that the star was for the jewish star symbol. the fur coat I was not very sure what it ment. the clock could have represented the times ann could move or have a normal talking voice. In black majic people got mad because everyone new what they though it was when really it wasen't. in the kitty game I think most people ejoyed it because you could run around most of the time without people not realising that the switch was being made. the last game we never played so I do not know what I could possible say about it. number 13 singing off.

Student #15 Naming yourself was kind of obvious. The first object was a star-much like the one Jews had to wear. The second object was a fur coat-relating to the fact that they wore as many clothes as possible. The third object-the clock-I’m not sure how that fits in.

Kitty wants a corner represents that the Jews went into hiding and how they had to find a safe place from the Nazis. In gibberish, they spoke with hand signals, showing someone what to do even if they didn’t understand what was being said. Black Magic, well, I’m not sure how it fits in to the story of Ann Frank.

Responses to Student #15:

1. I’m pretty sure that the clock showed when they could move around, because remember when Mr. Frank said you can’t go any where but the place your in until a certain time (8)

Student #16 Name yourself tags for me were very obvious how they connect with the story. The very first name tag was a star which connected with the story because the Jewish people had to wear stars at all times so people knew they were Jewish. The fur coat connected because when Anne Frank and her family fled to there new home they had to wear as many clothes as possible so they would have enough to wear there. Then the clock was the chiming of the clock tower outside.

The other games I’m not so sure about…kitty wants a corner might have something to do with the Jewish in hiding always searching for new homes behind the Nazis back, but I’m not quite sure yet.

Responses to Student #16:

1. 15-The fact that the clock nametag some how fits in still make me wonder. It could mean that from a certain time, like 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. you had to be quiet. Or how the clock rang out. I think it could mean a couple of things.

2. I agree with the nametags because they were very obvious to me too. Though the clock could be debatable just like student 15 said. I agree that Kitty in the Corner relates somehow to the Jews hiding from the Nazis as I think Black Magic does. (19)

Student #19 The different name tags represent different things. The star name tag represents the Star of David that the Jewish people had to wear during Hitler’s rule. The fur coat name tag represents all the clothes that Anne and her family wore when they went into hiding. They had to wear all their clothes because it would look suspicious if they brought suitcases. The clock name tag had many meanings. It could represent the time that they are allowed to walk around or it could represent the clock outside that Anne looks at out the window.

The games are a bit harder though. I think Kitty in the Corner represents how the Jews had to go into hiding and if the Nazis found you they took your house. But that doesn’t explain the fact that you took the place of the person in the middle. Also the Nazis didn’t ask for you house, they took it and you. If Kitty in the Corner represents what I think it does, it’s a very watered down version. The game Black Magic is even harder to figure out how it relates. It could represent the Jews deceiving the Nazis by hiding. I think that’s what it is.

So figuring out what everything represents is actually harder than I thought, but I think I have a pretty good idea.

Student #20 I think that the star represents the star of david and the fur coat represents how the families had to wear all of their clothes to seem inconspicuous when they moved. The clock is the times that they can or can't move around. When we played kity in the corner I thought that it symbolized that the Franks had to move and black magic shows the children's confusion on why.

Student #21 The game Kitty in the Corner relates to Anne Frank, because the kitty was the Germans and the all the other people were the Jews. In Kitty in the Corner, the kitty wanted every ones corner, just like the Germans wanted to put all the Jews in the concentration camps. Everybody ran from the kitty, just like the Jews ran from the Germans. In the game black magic, I was frustrated. Back then, the Jews were probably frustrated at the Germans for throwing them and their families into concentration camps. Black magic was also very deceiving, just as the Germans could have been to the Jews.

The name tags could have represented several things. I thought that the star might have represented the star all Jewish people had to wear. The fur coat represented how Anne Frank’s family had to take as many clothes as possible when they left to go hide out. I think that the clock either represented the time period that this story took place, or the time they could move around.

Responses to Student #21:

1.I agree with your opinion and the thing about the concentration camps gave new thoughts. Maybe to think about the big picture instead of little areas. 20

I was absent for a few of the games so I get really confused when people start talking about clocks and stars and what not. That for me is really frustrating because I want to understand so badly. I find it really hard to connect the text that I just read today with games that were played almost a week ago. That being said, I think that “Kitty Wants Your Corner” has to do with moving from place to place and not getting caught by the police. “Black Magic” relates to the way that some people are kind of oblivious in a way, like being locked in the house, while others have all the information they need, like people in the outside world.
