Question:
Part I: What were your thoughts and feeling during the games today in class?
NEW
Silent Directions/Instructions
Predator/Protector
Tag
Name Tag (duck)
Part II: Can you make more connections between the games we play and the text?
Connect the text with our games. Make as many connections as you can, and explain them enough so that we can understand your idea. Remember how it felt to play. What you were thinking about? What were you pretending? And then connect this to the text.
Here are a list of games that we've played so far (please note that some have been played more than one time):
Black Magic
Kitty in the Corner
Gibberish
Silent Directions/Instructions
Predator/Protector
Tag
Name Tag/Naming (yellow star, clock tower, fur coat, duck)
Student #1 In silent directions I felt that I understood her. But I see the connection to the text. And with slow-mo tag the connection to the book was when they would move around during the day. SO they couldn't be loud. It was very funy to watch everyone run in slow-mo. Predetor/Pretector was weird cause it was hard to stay close the the protecter and away from your predator. The duck thing was Mrs. Quack Quack.

Student #2 During the games to day I at first felt confused and then I understood what we were doing. At first i didnt see the connection with the text but now I get it. When we played the the new games I thought they were funny! Watching every one look like tollets was really funny.
Responses to Student #2:
1. I thought they were really funny too! What connection did you notice? Im just dying to know! I thought the connections were hard to see but look in #6 to find out what I thought.
#3~~~I thought the people that looked like toilets looked funny too but I didn't get the connection between the tag game and the text.
Student #3
-When we played the game “Silent directions” I felt kind of confused because at first I didn’t really know what we were supposed to do. In the game “predator/protector” I felt weird following someone while trying to stay away from someone at the same time. Also in the game “slow-mo tag” I kept for getting to go slow and just walk.
I think the name tag relates to the text because in the story Peter mentions how Anne gets called Mrs. Quack Quack. Also I think the game “silent directions” related to the text because in the story the parents probably had to tell the kids to do stuff without speaking. Then they wouldn’t get caught by the Nazis.-
Responses to Student #3:
1. I was really confused at the begining too! And I think you that might be right that the parents had to tell the kids what to do without speaking, because that is very true! Well at least what i know about it! (4)
Student #4
I was a little confused at the begining but I soon caught on! In the game it was a little frustrating only because the person I was trying to stay away from kept following me! I think that maybe the people we were trying to stay away from were the germans and we were trying to hide/stay away from them. Also when you talked to us in gibberish maybe the Jewish had to talk in their own kind of language (or gives signs) so the germans wouldnt know what they were saying. When you first started talking in giberish I wasnt sure what you were saying but I caught on quick!

Student #5 I didn't get the duck thing. But I did get the game Predator/Protector! You try and follow someone in that game. In the text, Anne is always following people around! But the games: Gibberish and Silent Directions, I did not connect with the text. I thought they where pointless.

Student #6 I thought that all of the nametags made sense when we used them. The Star-Star of David, Clock-Time they couldn’t walk around in, Coat-The coat that lady was sewing and the duck being the girl getting made fun of. I though the tag game had to do with it because we were going in slow motion like we were trying not to make noise and the same to the silent instructions. (Cannot make noise during the day). I think Gibberish was trying to talk with your hands during the day instead of your mouth. #6
Responses to Student #6:
1. I agree with you on the coat... I never thought of the coat being the one in Mrs. Vann Dan's lap, but now I see that connection, before I thought it was them wearing many coats when they traveled to the new home but now I believe both ideas. (16)
2. I always thought the coat was that they had to wear as many clothes as possible, I never though of it being Mrs. Vann Dan's coat. I totally understand your way and I think it makes a lot of sense. I think they're both right. (19)
3.I thought the coat could represent what the layers they had to wear, but I like the sewing idea too. (8)
Student #7 I think the game predator/protector related to the text because the Jewish had to stay away from the Germans and stay near their friends and family. The game silent directions related to the text because Anne and her family had to communicate without talking while the workers were there .I think the duck represented when Peter was making fun of Anne by saying “Mrs. Quack Quack ”.
Responses to Student #7:
1. #1 I think so too, I think that they had to run from the germans and stay close to their family.
Student #8I felt a little confused at first, because I wasn’t sure what was going on with the silent directions. After a little while I connected to the text with the games. The duck name tag, I believe was representing when peter was making fun of Anne. I thought that the tag game was representing the times they couldn’t move and they had to be silent even though we could move. I think that gibberish was a game the helped the people in hiding know what the other people wanted.
Responses to Student #8:
1. I agree with your connections and the Predator/Protector I thought was related to Anne staying away from the Nazis and trying to stay near her father. #20
Student #9
During Silent directions I felt like I got the general idea of what she wanted me to do but I did not catch the small details like ‘bring your book.’ During Predator/Prey I began to figure out who was following me and I felt weird and scared. This was like Anne’s family being followed, the predator was trying to hunt me or turn her family in. Today my name tag was a duck and this relates to my book because Anne’s nickname was Quack Quack because she talked a lot.

I thought that the games that we played were really funny, and I had a good time. The game “silent instructions” related to the story because during the hours that the could not make any noise, the Frank family had to communicate silently, which is what we had to do. “Kitty in the Corner” connects to the story because the people in the circle had to switch places with people without the kitty seeing them. Anne’s family had to run away and hide without the Nazis seeing them. Having the duck nametag related to the story because Peter was making fun of Anne and calling her “Miss Quack Quack” like she had been called in school. In the game of “protector/ predator”, I felt a little nervous because Mrs. Schick kept saying things like “your predator has a machine gun!” I’m sure that all of the Jews in hiding felt the same way. I think so because they were breaking the law by hiding, and if the Nazis found them, they would be severely punished, and possibly killed.
Responses to Student #10:
1. Your Silent Instructions relation was the same as mine. I realized that the duck related to her nickname as soon as I read it. I felt nervous during Predator/protector also because of the bad things Mrs. Schick was saying. #9
Student #11
When we were playing the games today in class I felt that the game predator and protector was kind of funny because the you would follow your protector the whole time and they wouldn’t even notice. I think the connection between the when we played tag in slow motion and “Anne Franks Diary” is that during the day the Franks had to be quiet so they wouldn’t be heard. The connections between “silent directions and instructions” are that during the day the franks could not talk so they probably had to use hand signals.
Responses to Student #11:
1. I also agree that the game silent insructions related to how Anne and the other people had to communicate during the day. (7) the lucky #
Student #12 When Mrs. Schick gave us silent directions and instructions I was very confused at first at what she was doing. I thought that you had to repeat what she was saying, along with doing the motions. I thing this related to Anne’s family having to take silent directions to know when they can move and when they can’t. In the game Predator and Protector, I thought it was interesting that you were staying away from someone while taking protection from someone else, both whom don’t know you are doing this. This resembled in my mind them running from the Nazis, even if they aren’t looking particularly for them. I think Tag in slow- mo represented them taking small, silent steps in the attic. The duck- shape name tags we wore today I think represent Anne’s whole “family” having the great desire to talk (quack, quack, quack (: ) after waiting long hours in silence.

Student #13 During todays game I though it was somewhat pointless because I wasent sure on how it connectided with the story or anything. The duck today I'm not sure what it means but hopefully tommarow I can figure it out. The silent directions I figured out very quickly and I though that was very creative.
Responses to Student #13:
1. (Student 12) - I caught on to the silent directions fairly quickly too. The duck for me represented them having to wait long hours, then finally being able to talk. Remeber Mrs. Quack Quack!? If you have no clue what I am talking about, I guess you'll find out tomorrow.
Student #14 My thoughts during the games today were totally different then the other games. I was in totally understanding during Silent Directions. I’m pretty sure that if what Mrs. Schick was trying to tell us was harder then what we had to do I know I would have had a harder time at doing the things. During Predator and Protector I was a little frazzled. I had two people to watch out for. I had to try and stay away from my predator and stay close to my protector. It was hard to pay attention to both people. During Tag I was getting frustrated. I didn’t want to go in slow motion. It took way too much time to do something. But I guess overall that it was ok. I have a feeling that the duck was meant to be like the tagger in Tag. Like the duck was like the ugly duckling and they stood out against everyone else.
When reading I remember Anne was getting frustrated because she wasn’t being able to be who she wanted. She was the oddball. This really reminded me of Tag. There is always one person that isn’t like the others. In Silent Directions that reminded me of who all during the day Anne and her family and the Van Daan’s couldn’t talk. They just had to sit up there and just try and sit still and do school work or sew. That must have been really hard to just sit there and really not do much of anything. The duck nametag also reminded me of Anne. She was the odd one out just like the ugly duckling. I’m not saying she’s ugly, its just that she stands out a little bit more then her sister and the rest of the family does. I also think of the duck when Peter called her Mrs. Quack Quack like the rest of her class did. I feel so bad for her, but it seems like she didn’t care that much. But I still feel bad.
Responses to Student #14:
1. I completely agree with your thoughts on Silent Directions. I didn't like going in slow motion either. But the duck i think relates to the nickname that Anne got at school. (17)

Student #16 __Part I: Feelings__
With silent instructions I was confused at first but then it started to make more sense as she was using hand gestures. Predator protector, for me I could see a lot of the connections… Mrs. Schick said not to make it obvious but that didn’t work out! IN tag it was fun because it was all slow motion and you had to be careful not to go too fast. Then lastly my feelings on the name tag were confused, I had no clue how it related to Anne Frank. Well that is until we read the scene, then it made sense.
__Part II: Connections__
In silent instructions I think it relates to Anne Frank because the people in the upstairs couldn’t talk or make any noise during the day else people would here them. Black magic is harder for me to come up with a connection, but it might be that the Jewish people were confusing (deceiving) the Nazis by hiding. Gibberish might be that when the franks were in the house during the day, they might have relied on hand gestures to communicate with one another during the time of day when they needed to be quiet. Predator protector might mean that the Jewish relied on their protectors to keep them safe, OR that people never knew if someone was helping out the Jewish. Tag was that you knew who the bad people were, and you had to get away from them. The latest name tag, the duck connects to Anne Frank because today we read about how her old teacher and class used to call her Mrs. Quack quack because she talked so much.
Responses to Student #16:
1. I agree with you on that the name tag about the duck as that everybody thought that Anne talked too much, that her teacher made a song about her that was called Ms. Quack Quack. I also agree with you that predator and protector was the Jew relying on other people to hide them from the Nazis

1. I didn’t like the games we played today as well as the previous ones. They didn’t make me think or strategize or anything really. Tag was fun, except that the slow motion part made it get old after a while. I honestly thought most of them were a little boring, but I do see some very strong connections to the text. With the game silent directions, it is probably very similar to the way Anne’s family has to live during the day. They cannot be seen or heard by workers so they probably rely heavily on these types of instructions. In predator/protector, I can see the Jewish people trying to stay away from certain people while still being near to others. Tag was connected in similar ways. The duck name tag related to when Peter was making fun of Anne for the nickname she had earned with a teacher.

Student #19 During the game Gibberish I was slightly confused at first but then I started to understand what Mrs. Schick meant and then it got easier. I think this connects to the text because Jews and people protecting Jews might need to come up with code words so the Nazis won’t know what they’re talking about. I think the silent instructions connection is along the same lines. The Jews could have also created hand signals because they can’t talk out loud during the day.
Predator/Protector was a bit harder for me to get. I personally didn’t like this game because it was boring and I couldn’t see a point. I know I probably should have felt scared but I didn’t. I don’t think I got out of the mindset of, “it’s just a game.” I do know how it connects though. The Jews would of course be you, and the protector is the people who are helping them hide. Also the predators are the Nazis. The Jews wanted to stay near their protectors and away from the Nazis.
The game of tag was by far the hardest for me to figure out. During the game I was having so much fun just watching everyone. They were making sounds and moving in slow motion, and they also were diving over each other. It was fun and it connected to the story. The connection was you knew who the “bad guy,” was and how to stay away from them, but sometimes you couldn’t stay away and you got tagged. In Anne frank the Jews know that the Nazis are evil and they know how to stay away from them, but sometimes they can’t stay away and they then get captured.
The name tags all related in different ways, but the new nametag also has a new connection. The duck connects to the story because Peter calls Anne Miss. Quack Quack; all because she talks too much. I talk too much and I would hate it if someone called me Miss. Quack Quack. Ugh.
Responses to Student #19:
1. I agree with 19. I would hate it if someone called me Miss Quack Quack. You can't help who you are and what you do. They had no right to make fun of her. They couldn probably make up a name for themselves for another petty reason.
Student #20When we played silent directions I wasn't paying attention to Mrs. Schick, but then justin poked me and I caught on. In toilet tag I had fun plushing and plunging toilets. The sound effects and slow-mo was fun. The Pretador/Protector game was wierd because I was part of a chain of people who had me as their protector and who I had as my predator.
Responses to Student #20:
1. I agree. Toilet tag was pretty awesome. Plus the sound affects were a blast. By the way, I think I might have been in that chain of people you talked about. (21)
Student #21 Today, I knew right off the bat what the silent direction game represented. It represented how Anne’s family had to communicate during the daytime when they were keeping quiet. I thought the game “Predator/Protector” was kind of fun. I think I stayed a little to close to my protector, and he may have figured me out. I wasn’t sure why, but my predator always seemed to be really close to me for some reason. After the game was over, I made a good connection between it and the story. I thought tag was the best game yet. I had never played tag before in slow motion, and I thought that was fun. I couldn’t really tell make a connection between tag and the story. The duck tag didn’t really make sense to me at first, but after reading about Miss. Quack Quack, it was pretty obvious what the tag represented.
I think the game “Gibberish” represented how the people hiding in the upstairs had to stay quiet, and only use hand signals to communicate. In “Predator/Protector,” I thought it represented how the Jews had to stay together and protect each other, but they had to stay away from the Nazis (predators). I thought tag represented a lot of the same things that Predator/Protector did. The person who was it, was like the Nazis, and all the other people were the Jews. That’s why we all tried to stay away from the person who was it.
