QUESTIONS FOR SECTION 2 -- QUESTION 5

Page history last edited by Anonymous 3 yrs ago

QUESTION:

The annex "family" continues some of their traditions in the annex despite terrible conditions and danger. What traditions would you do your very best to preserve despite trying times? Why? Try and be specific. For example, the "family" celebrated Hannukah with the menorah, but it was important to Anne to preserve the tradition of giving gifts, so she crafted her own.

Student #1I would probably keep my cristmas tradition of eating a christmas day breakfast at my grandmas.

Student #2 I would have to say eating dinner together. Because even in hard times you should always be with your family. Because when I’m having a hard time with something I always talk to my family about it.

Student #4

I would celebrate Thanksgiving because that’s a time you can celebrate things you’re thankful for. Like for Anne and her family, they may have a lot of negative things happening but they could be thankful that they’re together as a family, and they’re not in one of those camps!

When I’m with my family for thanksgiving we get together and talk, play games, eat a feast and just enjoy each others company. Most of my family lives all over the country and even in different countries, so just when we’re all together its still makes Thanksgiving fun.

Student #5 I would preserve the big meals of hollidays. Because I love good old home cookn' from my momma! It's very important to me! I also would preserve reading the Christmas story from the Bible at Christmas time! It's a tradition that has been with our family for a long time! Those are atleast two things!

Responses to Student #5:

1. My momma cooks great too, but I bet she could make a better apple pie than yours! #20 rules!

Student #6 A tradition that I would keep would definitely be hiding Easter candy all over the house and going looking for it. It is so much fun!

Jellybean trails tell you where the next is going big pile of candy is going to be. Plus while all the kids are looking for candy my parents make a huge breakfast feast; Omelets, bacon, sausage and much, much more. This is my favorite meal of the year!

Student #7 A tradition I would try to keep would be Christmas because every year on Christmas Eve we go to my Grandmas house and have a big feast and after we open presents and take a family picture . Some people like Christmas because they like the presents but I like it most because I get to see my family , well I like the presents to .

Responses to Student #7:

1. I like going to see my family too on Christmas since we live like 7 hours away from them we don't get to see them much.

Student #8 I will always continue Christmas dinner. We always have our family over or go 2 our cousins’ house. We have a blast every time. On Christmas we eat so much! My cousins and I play Xbox 360 or have a snowball fight or sometimes even snowboard. I love this day because u get to be with the people you love and care about.

Responses to Student #8:

1. Me too! I love christmas it's so much fun. Especially when all of my familyh comes over too!

Student #9

I would celebrate Christmas because it is very important to my family. I would give out simple gifts, sing Christmas songs, and decorate as best I can given the circumstances. I would make some gifts and decorations myself. I would also love to bake if I was allowed to. Each Christmas I make special desserts and everyone would be missing out if I didn’t. Anne had to deal with her surroundings and so would I.

Student #10

A tradition that my family keeps is that we always celebrate Christmas in Green Bay with our extended family, but we also celebrate together at home. In order to do this, we have two celebrations. A few days before Christmas, we open gifts at home. Usually two days after that, we drive to my grandma’s house in Green Bay, and on Christmas day, we are still able to be with our whole family.

Responses to Student #10:

1. I agree I would celebrate Christmas to because I get to see my family . (7) da lucky #

Student #11

Chritmas is always the best time of the year. We go to church then we go to one of my cousins house and we watch movies, play games, and have snowball fights. This is how it's every year.

Responses to Student #11:

1.

Christmas is one of my favorite times of the year too! Snowball fights are super duper cool also. I most definatly agree with everything you say! #6****** YA!

Student #12 I think one of holidays I would never forget if we were trapped somewhere like the annex would be Christmas. Our relatives usually come to our house, and we have a great dinner and all of us guys play many competition games. We used to have a rotation of whose side of the family we go to, which house we go to, but this list has kind of fallen apart over the years. If I was trapped like Anne we would probably keep with the tradition, well as best as we could, because you could obviously not do some of your usual events. If my grandpa, who is a retired pastor, was there, we would also keep up the tradition of him giving a long, meaningful prayer before dinner.

Responses to Student #12:

1. Even if my relatives could not come or if I could not go to my relatives place, I too would still celebrate Christmas. Praying is a good tradition that would not end if you got stuck in Anne’s circumstance. If anything, you should pray more in the new hiding spot. #9

Student #14 I would like to preserve it would have to be Easter. In our family it is one of the most precious days. It’s one of the most celebrated and means the most too our family. We always have a nice dinner and then we just celebrate that day and enjoy everyone’s company. Other holidays sometimes we all can’t make it but everyone comes to this holiday meal. I really feel that if it were desperate times we would get the most out of this tradition. Its got almost a calming feeling when I just think about it and think of the significance of the day and its meaning and the surrounding of family. It just comforts me. I

I remember one year, my cousin was the boy who on his grandpa’s farm got his leg sawed off by the tractor and that day we all saw him and he had his prosthetic leg and we all cried. He looked amazing. This was the first chance we all got to see him, on Easter day and I will never forgot the sight, smells or anything about that day. It’s just that precious

Responses to Student #14:

1.

Must of been sad to see your cousins leg get sawed off.

Wow, I'm really close with most of my cousins so i cannot imagine witnessing that. That type of thing would be very important to me too. (17)

2. (Student #12) - Easter is special holiday for us too. I feel horrible for cousin. I would be so sad if I heard that happened to my cousin. Your a brave person to put it on this site.

Student #16 I celebrate Christmas so I would continue with Christmas dinner. Even though it might have to be really small it wouldn’t matter because it’s just being with your family that makes it so special. It’s so nice to just sit down with your entire family and have a peaceful night.

Responses to Student #16:

1. I agree that this day is also very special. Its time to be with family and I think thats that is what really matters.

2. I love Christmas so much! Family is the most important thing to me. (8)

3.Christmas dinner is one of my favorites to. I agree that it is nice to relax with family for a change. Especially, since they can sometimes be a pain. Likewise, I think that the size of the meal wouldn’t matter, because it’s the thought that counts. (21)

4. I agree that the size of the meal wouldn't count. As long as everyone is happy and cares about those around them. (19)

Student #17

Before we moved here, just about every holiday was a big extravagant event. My dad’s side of the family would always go all out. They were all great but my favorite has to be the way we celebrated the 4th of July. All day the kids would hang out and ride dirt bikes and four wheelers for hours and then jump in the pool to escape the 100˚weather. Then the men would take us up to pick out any fireworks we wanted (even the big illegal ones; Shhhh!). We would wait until it got dark and then sit out in a field and shoot them off until we ran out. There wasn’t a year I can remember that I didn’t fall asleep on the ride home out of sheer exhaustion. It’s something I’ll always remember. I’m not sure how in the world I would be able preserve that but I would really try.

Student #19 If I found myself in trying times I would try to preserve Thanksgiving. I would preserve it because it’s the only tradition that my family carries out that I don’t relate to stress and raised voices. My family doesn’t have many traditions and most make at least one person in my family totally stressed. Thanksgiving is a happy time and I think if I was in trying times, happy moments would be few and far between so I’d savor them.

Responses to Student #19:

1. When I read this excerpt, I suddenly thought of my mother. She is probably the most stressed out person on the face of the planet when it comes to Thanksgiving. She gets up at 5:00 in order to make a family feast for the 22 people that come over to our house. It is great that your family does not have to deal with that kind of stress. #25

Student #20 If I went through trying times I would definitely do my best to celebrate Christmas. Every year my extended family fills up the living room and we watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas. That time is very special to me because I get to talk with all of my family at once and tell stories about the past year with the corny Grinch movie playing in the background.

Student #21 If I were going through trying times, I would definitely try my hardest to preserve having Christmas with my family. For as long as I can remember, every year at Christmas time, my family gets together to celebrate. No matter what’s going on, we always have a good time. We talk, play, and just hang out. Usually at Christmas we exchange gifts and eat a big feast. If I were in a situation like Anne’s, it would seem a bit different hardly having anything to eat or exchange, but I think I would survive. I guess I would just have to be like Anne, and make use of what I’ve got.

Responses to Student #21:

1. I agree that it would be strange not getting gifts or watching corny Christmas films with my family, but it's the fact that your WITH your family that is important. (16)

Student #25 One time my cousin and I got in a huge fight. I was so mad at him that I could hardly look at him. Then, his birthday came rolling around. Now every birthday is a major holiday for us. We always try and do our best to celebrate them no matter what. This was very hard for me though because I was so mad at him. I had to just buck up and get through it even though that they were "trying times".
