QUESTION:
In Act 2, Scene 1, Anne tells Peter, “We have problems here that no other people our age have ever had.” What are some of the problems that people your age have today? Are any of them problems that people your age have never had before? Explain.
Student #1 I think that problems we face are influence of drugs. Back in the 70's kids didn't really have to worry about drugs that much. It wasn't that much of a problem as it is now.

Some of the problems people my age have today are the influences of drugs, looking good, and people you hang out with. A long time ago like in the 50's-70's kids didnt really have that problem. Everyone seemed to get along and there wasn't the worry about drugs. Plus everyone looked skinny and fit.

Peer pressure gets to a lot of kids these days. It’s happening so much that a lot of people don’t even notice when it’s happening. They might not make much sense but it’s true. Whether it’s what to just buy at the mall. Or if their being pressured to do something they shouldn’t be doing. Kids don’t want to look bad in front of their “friends” so they’ll do whatever it takes just to fit in. Peer pressure gets to everyone, and it has become a big problem.

Student #5 Yeah! There are lots of problems that teens have today! One is drugs. Teens are more opened to drugs now these days because they are hurting inside! Some reasons for this are: divorsed parents, abuse at home, bad grades and education, and kids teasing them at school. The drugs problem is big. There is also a problem with some adults not believing in teens. Some of these adults think that teens just meen trouble. And that's not at all true. So yes, teens have to deal with lots of problems these days! And personelly, I think that teens these days, have to deal with more junk, than in the olden days, or "Back in THE Day!" Teens also have to deal with peer preasure and bullying at school. Some kids get teased every day just because of their body forms, or their grades, or even their religion! Thats wrong! Other kids do the teasing. Some of these bullies have gotten teased themselves, and that's why they do it to other kids. That is also a big problem. But the peer pressure is even sometimes worse! Kids will push other kids to do bad things that those kids don't want to do! Peer preasure includes drugs all the way to asking a girl/guy out.(depending on your gender) These are all big problems! And every single one of them needs to be dealt with, because they are all bad!

I agree with you. I think kids today have more prblems than "in the olden days". Alot of people have parents that have split up too.
Student #6 I think kids these days have alot of issues to deal with. They might not have as many new issues as they did years ago but I think one is grades. Never before has there been so much pressure to get good grades. A C used to be average now if I get a B my parents will be mad at me. Plus, College, back in the day college used to be a rarity. Now you hyave to go to college to get a desent job. Unless of corse you want to work at a McDonalds all of your life(no offence to anyone out there). I also think colleges should lower there tuition. Now when you think about three big buying decisions you think.....House...Car....and college? It doesn't make sence for people who used to be kids to still be paying for something they did in their earley twenties.
Responses to Student #6:
1.Ha! Yeah if you get a bad grade colleges don't always take you, and personally I wouldnt want to work at McDonalds.(8)
2.) I dont think anyone would want to work at McDonalds (well at least I wouldn't)I think colleges should lower their tuition too! (#4)
Student #7 Some problems that teens have today are doing drugs being healthy doing good in school and being popular and not being teased by the other students . Anne and Peter didn’t have to worry about getting good grades in school and doing drugs because they were hiding in the annex. Also they didn’t have to worry about being popular and being teased by other kids . Well Peter teases Anne sometimes and says stuff like “Hi little Ms. Quack Quack”.But I think Anne is starting to like Peter .

I agree with the shelter that the attic protects them from. If they stay in the attic, they will not take drugs, worry about being healthy, or doing good in school. They also don't have to worry about being popular and not being teased by the other students. I agree also with the love connection between Anne and Peter.
Student #8 Teens today face so many issues these days. September the 11th was the biggest things teens before us hadn’t faced. There is also so much peer pressure to do drugs or smoke or drink alcohol. So many people these days target teens for everything. They make it seem like cigarettes are cool or are the cool thing to do and they want you to buy there product and I just think it’s wrong that other people force us teens into doing something bad! The fact that friends are on your side is good and bad. They could want you to do drugs or they could be helping you say no to drugs. Adults put pressure on teens too. They want so high standards and punish you if you doesn’t meet them sometimes. I think that’s just wrong. You shouldn’t be putting pressure for us to get all A’s. Some students aren’t capable of doing that. Also people worry about their body way to much these days. I see it all the time in our school and on T.V. Kids want to be like famous people so some girls want to be really skinny and look pretty. You can really hurt your body that way.
Responses to Student #8:
1. You are right about cigarettes but some time ago they didn't know they were bad so they had no pressure. I also agree with you on education. #6!!!!!!
2. I agree about people trying too hard to look a certain way. People hurt themselves so bad just trying to be "normal." Too bad stick skinny isn't normal at all. I think people should like the way they look and stop hurting themselves. (19)
3. Yeah, I agree. You can really hurt your body by doing those things!#5
Student #9 Some teens my age have problems dealing with weight, school, and after school activities. Most teens have one of these common problems. Some problems are unique. It all depends on the home environment. Anne's home environment is in an attic, so her problems were different than mine because I live in a good house. Anne can't leave her attic to do anything, while I go out to go to school and activities. I get influenced by the media and stay updated with the news, while Anne got the occasional crossword puzzle and some small news.

In our world today, kids face many problems. A few are drugs, alcohol, getting bad grades, abuse, terrorism, or poverty. Some of these the people can choose, however, others they have no control over. I think that today, obesity is more of a problem than ever. One reason is that parents work more (so they aren’t able to cook), and so unhealthy fast food is encouraged. Also, lots of kids play “Playstation” or “game cube” when before, kids would play outdoor games and run around.
Responses to Student #10:
1. I agree that obesity is a problem these days and kids not exercising enough because they want to play thier playstation. (11)

I think some problems that people have today is ow there life is going. Sometime they are not happy withings hat are happening in thier life. Like for example their grades. They want thier grades to be good but thier grads ometimes are bad. I think alot of people had this problem before.

Student #12 Anne and Peter obviously had different problems then us. They didn’t have to worry about school grades and popularity and much more middle school worries. They’re problems were much greater than “How does my hair look?” They lived with the fear of the Nazis and any sound that could reveal their hiding place. I’m sure they wished they were safe and they could be a regular teenager again.

Student #14 People our age deal with the problem of friends. Friends are a huge part of our lives. We come to them for everything and anything. But we don’t always get along. We get in fights and sometimes those fights lead to never speaking to that person again, those are the worst things that could happen.
Another problem we deal with is drama. Oh the lovely drama. Mostly drama is created by a totally misunderstanding and then there’s a lot of she said they said and none of it is ever true to begin with. Drama can be a lot of different things. It can be started from anything. Even the most simple things and then gets blown out of proportion and everyone gets hurt.
Rumor: A story or statement in general circulation without confirmation or certainty as to facts. Rumors are things started by people that have no idea if something is true or not. They put in whatever details, true or not, just to make this “rumor” more interesting. The more interesting it is the more people will pay attention to it and then spread it. Rumors hurt. They are not only fake, or partly fake, but they tear people down. Rumors are a big thing in Middle School. And they are horrible. Its just something that we have to deal with.
Responses to Student #14:
1. You're so right about the drama. It's horrible and it tears friendships apart. Sometimes if it comes up when I'm talking to my mom she'll say, "This was never and issue when i was your age." and I just want to say, " EXACTLY!!! I know you didn't deal with this and that's my point!" (17)

Student #16 The problems that our age has are countless; the list goes on and on. There is so much pressure at school… to be pretty, thin, athletic, smart, drugs, popular, you name it! The future just doesn’t make itself up; we make good and bad choices that affect our future, meaning your entire life! You can’t just go outside and say ‘Hey I think I’m going to go steel a car!’ (Ha ha) you have to think about the consequences. The grades that we are getting now will be determining our future, like how good a college we get into, good job, house, education for your kids and just your life as a whole! I personally think it was easier to get jobs or get into college in previous decades because education requirements have grown since then and jobs have more expectations now. We have our wholes lives before us and we need to make the right choices now, and avoid that peer pressure.
Responses to Student #16:
1. (Student #12) - All you have said there is very true. Peer pressure can definetly make you do bad things. Even if you think drugs are cool now, in the long run they will affect you for life.
Student #17 Teens today face a lot of stress. Or at least I do. There is just so much pressure to be perfect in every aspect that it gets extremely overwhelming. There are a lot of responsibilities that people me age have today that I know my parents didn’t have. I know my parents didn’t juggle school, friends, soccer, volleyball, and trying to have a life on top of all that. Everything builds up until it’s too much to handle and that’s when I think kids turn to drugs and alcohol and other destructive substances. Which I think is much more readily available today. It’s very tempting when kids are presented with tough decisions everyday. Kids also are very worried about what other people think, especially for girls. On top of everything we have going on we also feel that we have to be perfect, or be what our friends are, or what the TV tells us we should be.

Student #19 I think that teens have a lot of problems these days. There’s school you have to worry about and drugs and you future. In school you have to get decent grades; a C average, yeah right! If I don’t get straight A’s, well it’s not good. Also there are so much more drugs now at school and all the peer pressure. Before we always thought, ‘Oh all the druggies are at other schools.’ But now I think we’re starting to realize that that’s not true there are people at our school who do drugs and you have to stay away from that. Also we need to worry about college. You have to go to a good college and there is so much stress on your future. I hear my parents talk and they say that when they were kids if you were good at math they were told to be engineers. Or they were told to be teachers if they were decent with kids. Now there are so many choices and you have to pick and once you do you’re sort of stuck with you decision. You’re told your future is in your hands but everyone tries to influence you and you have to know how to avoid that. There are a ton of things teens these days have to deal with, but I think we can do it.
Responses to Student #19:
1. That’s a good point about grades. If I got a C, it wouldn’t be good either, even though it is average. I agree with you about people and drugs. I also once thought that kids who did drugs were at other places, but now I have mixed thoughts about it. I also agree that the future is in our hands. (21)
2. I also agree that I never thought drugs were a problem at our school. Just now are we realizing all the conflicts that we thought we could avoid. (16)
2. Drugs is a big problem now. Before now I've never seen so many problems with it. Some people I know even. I think its horrible and really shouldn't have to be a problem but it is, sadly.(14)

Student #21 There are many problems that kids have today. Some of these problems are grades, drugs, and just trying to fit in. Grades these days are an issue, because there is so much competition to get into good universities. Since now days there are so many curricular activities, and homework, it’s even harder to keep grades up. Drugs are another big issue, because people try to sell them to kids, and they don’t always know how bad they can mess up there lives with them. Peer pressure can also lead to drugs, because kids try and do drugs to be cool, or fit in with others. Trying to fit in is also another issue, because kids will do a lot to try and fit in with groups of people. One other problem today, is kids coming from divorced parents. It can be really hard on a person who has had to divide time between two people. I think that many of these problems are starting to come now, and may get worse as time goes on.
