QUESTION
Today, I asked you to think about the following three terms:
*Prejudice – an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
*Hate – to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward; detest.
*Stereotype – ideas held by some individuals about members of particular groups, based solely on membership in that group. They are often used in a negative or prejudicial sense and are frequently used to justify certain discriminatory behaviors.
1. What do you think these three terms have in common, or how are they linked?
2. Explain how these three terms relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank.”
*All definitions taken from: www.dictionary.com
Student #1 These terms are related because they all lead to one another. Like a stereotype could lead to prejeduce and that could in turn lead to hate. It relateds to Anne frank because the jews were sereotyped and hated by the nazi's.

I think these terms are related because each of them have something to do with not liking something or someone. I think they're linked because prejudice is where someone doesn't like someone because they think they shouldnt. Stereotype is where someone doesn't like another person because of a group or crowd they are in or their religious beliefs. They all link to eachother with the fact that they involve dislike or hatred. In Ann Frank the nazis were stereotype because they didn't like Jews. also alot of people were prejudice against the Jews too. All the nazis hated the Jews.
Responses to Student #3:
1. (1) I agree I think the people were pregudice against the jews.

Student #5 All three words were bad. They were all things that the Germain soldiers had problems with! Like in Ann Frank. The Jews were hated. They had steriotypes put on them, and some people were prejudice against them! They are all bad and big big big big problems!
Responses to Student #5:
1. (Student #12) - These 3 things are definetly very bad and problems we still have today. Just think of how it would feel to be Anne in her position.
~~~#3£
I agree, they were bad things and big problems.
Student #6 I think all of these terms are alike because they all have to do with hatred for a reason that doesn't really mean anything about their true personality. They relate to Anne Frank because people hated her for being a Jew even thought she was a good person if you got to know her.
Student #7 I think that the three terms prejudice , hate ,and stereotype all relate because they are all types of someone against someone else. It relates to Anne Frank because Hitler was against the Jews .
Student #8 I think that these 3 terms are linked together, because they are all words that are used to judge people u don’t know or a particular race or culture. I believe that in “The Diary of Anne Frank” Hitler was being prejudice by thinking all Jews are bad and should die. Anne Frank was not being stereotypical at the end by saying, “Despite what they have done to use, I still think not all people are bad” or something like that. I don’t remember the exact words. Also I think Hitler hated the Jewish people.
Responses to Student #8:
1. I agree that that all the words are judgmental words and also these terms say you don't have to actually know them to judge them.(16)
2. I agree. Hitler was a pretty prejudice person, and hated the Jews. I think he should have given the Jews a chance, and then he might have figured out that they are really no different than any other ordinary person. (21)
3. I agree!!!!! Why did people hate just because of beliefs? I can't believe Anne said peopole are still good after all she had been through!(((((6)))))))
Student #9 Prejudice, hate, and stereotypes are related because one leads to the other. If you have hatred, you have prejudice. If you have prejudice, you will stereotype. One bad thing will lead to another. All of these words were used in the Holocaust. They also used these words in Anne’s life. The people had hatred, were prejudiced, and had told stereotypical stories about the Jews.
Prejudice, hate, and stereotype are related because they are all a personal, specific judgment. They relate to The Diary of Anne Frank because Adolf Hitler was stereotypical, hating, and especially prejudicial towards the Jews.
Responses to Student #10:
1. I agree that the three words are all personal judgments. When people do these things someone always gets hurt. I also agree that Hitler acted this way towards the Jews. #9
Student #11
The three terms hate, prejudice, stereotype are all related because they can hurt people. I think these terms are related to Anne Franks Diary because in those years the Nazis hated the Jews. Hitler was being prejudice and took the step of destroying 6 million of them. The Nazis thought that the Jews were to be treated as low people in the society just because they were Jews. The y thought that they could do what ever they wanted with them.
Responses to Student #11:
1. I agree that all the terms can hurt people. Everyone the person who is hated, or those who are doing the hating. (19)
Student #12 Prejudice, hate, and stereo type are all similar. You can be prejudice about someone by the way they look or act. You can stereo type someone by their race or religion. You can hate someone by their actions. All of these things are bad to do and you should try to avoid them. Treat other people the way you would want to be treated. In “The Diary of Anne Frank”, people stereo typed, hated, and were prejudice about Jews. Hitler liked people that only looked a certain way, and was prejudice about anybody that looked different.
Student #14 I think what they all have in common is that they all judge someone before they even get to know who they are or what their purpose is. Usually, they are totally wrong. People don’t know who someone is just by looking at them and judge. All humans do this its in who we are as people but what I think we need to do it realize that we really don’t know these people and before we even make an assumption about someone we need to know what they are about. These things are related to the "Diary of Anne Frank" because they judged the Jews and they didn’t know anything about them and then they hated them because they were somewhat different then themselves. And once they got this thought into their heads they started to hate them and felt the need to kill them because they were different. So Anne was a Jew, and her and her family and the rest of the Jews and they were discriminated against for being that.
Responses to Student #14:
1. I definitely agree that most of the time, people are completely wrong when they judge others. Great point! (17)
Student #16 I think these three terms are similar because they both are words that describe someone who does not like another for reasons like they are from a different religion(stereotype) or just don’t like them at all(hate or prejudice). These terms relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because in the story because the Nazi’s don’t look at who the Jewish are, how they act. The only thing they know about them is that they are Jewish, and they extremely hate them for that.
Responses to Student #16:
1. i agree that Hitler really had no reason to hate the Jews. Like you said all he really hated them for is because they were Jewish.(11)
2. I agree. They all are in common because they just didn't like each other because they were a different religion and they thought that was wrong. Then they started hating them and stereotyping them and judging them.(14)
Student #17 Prejudice, hate, and stereotypes all have to do with judging others negatively. In each of them, it seems like you never really gave the person a chance. If I was receiving these thoughts and feelings, it would really hurt me because I would feel like if they had just given me a shot they could really like me. Instead, they just judged me and never let me show them what a great person I am, that’s might even make me mad. Yeah, it definitely would. These terms relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because they were all thing that the Nazis showed towards the Jewish people. They were prejudice because they didn’t give each person a chance; they just killed them without knowing anything about them. Hate was there because you really wouldn’t kill anyone if you didn’t hate them. Not on purpose anyways. And stereotyping was a big part of the Holocaust because based on one opinion of Jewish people, thousands were killed. Anne and her family saw this everyday. I'd be seriously depressed if I knew that so many people had those kinds of feelings toward me.
Student #19 I believe that all three terms are related but not the same. I believe that hate can mean different things; you can hate for a reason or with none. If you are prejudiced you can be really prejudiced or extremely prejudiced. If you are prejudiced against someone then you harbor some hate against them. Even if you don’t notice it or act upon it it’s there, whether you want it to be or not. If you stereotype someone then you don’t hate them, but it’s possible that you do. If you’re stereotypical then you believe something about someone without ever meeting or knowing them and you might hate them. You might not though.
These terms relate to Anne Frank because Hitler was prejudiced against the Jews, he hated all of them. He was also stereotypical because he hated the Jews without knowing them, without ever knowing them. He hated them. He hated them so much he killed them. Tortured them. Anne had to live through this. Anne’s family had to live through this. I hope I am never at the receiving end of such strong prejudice, stereotyping, and most of all hate.
Student #20 All of those things were associated with Jews. The Nazis hated them; the people were prejudice against them, and there were mean stereotypes that people thought, and Hitler brought that all around. Anne Frank experienced this and that was horrible.
Student #21 I think that these three words are definitely linked together. First of all, they are all words that deal with someone making up their mind by what they have heard or seen, rather than experiencing it themselves. Hate could be an exception to that, but many times it comes from being prejudice or stereotypical.
The words prejudice, hate, and stereotype relate to “Anne Frank,” because they describe what many people thought of the Jews. Hitler pretty much hated the Jews, so he convinced the people in Germany that the Jews were causing all their problems. The German people became prejudice of the Jews, and now hated the Jews, and they didn’t even know anything about them. German’s were also being stereotypical, because they thought Jews were all liars, cheaters, and bad people.
