QUESTIONS:
Here are a few quotes for you to consider. Read and think about them thoughtfully then craft a response regarding what they mean to you, what they make you think about, how they relate to you, etc.
1. In, "The Diary of Anne Frank," Anne states in Act II, Scene 3: "But ... and that is the great question ... will I ever be able to write well? I want to so much. I want to go on living even after my death."
2. Poet Martin Niemoller (1892-1984), wrote:
"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out;
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was not one of them, so I did not speak out;
Then they came for the Jews but, I was not Jewish so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."
Student #1 I do belive Anne has gon on after her death very much. She has explained somewhat what it was like at that time. I think Martin means is that you need to speak up before the time is to late.
Responses to Student #1:
1. I think Anne has gone on after death too! By the way you spelled "gone" wrong.

I think Anne Frank is still kind of living (well we know about her) because she's in our history and people talk about her everyday! It's also really cool thatshe wanted so much to be a great writer and her journal became published!

Student #5 The first quote was very interesting. Ann wanted her spirit to live on and for people to here of her past through her writing. The second was about a man who wasn't a person who was in danger in the holocost. Or so he thought. When he did become in danger, it was to late to protest!
Responses to Student #5:
1. I agree alot of people that were not Jews didn't think that they wre in danger and kpt quiet bt one the Nazis decided that they din't like them like you said it was to late.(11)
Student #6 I think it is amazing that she said she wanted to write well so bad and she wanted to live on after she died and now her writings live on through so many of us through her diary. I'm not sure if she is still living in her afterlife but with my beliefs and the kind of person she is I'd say she is living. She was in amazing person and I wonder if she was living today would people still think that??

Student #7 I think that what Anne said means that she wants to write so past generations can read what she wrote .I think that what Martin said meant that the Nazis went for the other people then they came for him and there was no time to do anything .
Responses to Student #7:
1. (Student #12) - I thought similar about Martin's poem. I think that he didn't particularly talk about the Nazis coming for him, but now that I think of it, thats a good connection.
Student #8 I think Anne’s wish came true, because she has lived on past her death. So many people know her story and it means a lot to them. She lives on in other people’s hearts. I’m not quite sure what the second part means. I may just not be smart or something.
Responses to Student #8:
1. Yup. Her story has defently lived on through the years. And is still toutching people's hearts. #5
2. Anne has definitely moved on, her story touches everyone who hears it. 16

Anne’s quote made me think about if you have a dream, even in the worst circumstances, you can strive for that goal. Anne wanted to write well and live on after her death. This relates to me that I show strive toward my goals. The poet’s quote said if you wait too long, you may miss out. He waited and then there was no one to speak for him. This relates to me saying that I should take action and do what I want.
Responses to Student #9:
1. Nicely said number nine. I like your style. It is sort of like when Adults say "You can do anything if you try hard enough". I think that is kind of what Anne ment. From: Number 6

I think that the quote that Anne Frank said meant to me is that Anne Frank wanted people these days to see what was going on and make better choices. I don’t real think it relates to me except that I also want to do something that could help other people. The poem I think meant is that when different people spoke out against different government the author of this poem didn’t but other people did. When they came for the author no one spoke out. I reminded me of other people who got killed in concentration camps.t #11
Responses to Student #11:
1.I agree that she is telling us to make better choices and she wants us to strive for our goals. I also agree that when it was finally his turn to speak, there was no one left. I think this meant do what you want before it is too late. #9
Student #12 The first quote I thought was very amazing. She wanted her writing to live long after she had passed away. Well, her plan succeeded! This relates to me because I always wished that my skills can be known for a long time too. To think that someone might write a book about you someday, well it’s just incredible. Martin Niemoller seems like a very wise man after I read the second poem. To me it means that you have to care about other people that are in need, because sooner or later, it will be you in their position and there will be no one there to assist you.

Student #16 You just know that Anne has moved on just by reading the play, reading the book ect. Everyone is so moved by it her spirit lives on in whoever is moved by her story
I think the second poem is about if you don’t speak you feelings then nothing will change, if things don’t change it will just get worse until everything goes wrong.

Student #17 Everything that I read about Anne frank amazes me. I can’t believe that these kinds of thought came from a 13 year old. She absolutely blows me away. That being said, Anne really wanted to be able to write well so that she could have a legacy after her death. She wanted to leave her thoughts and feelings in a way that people after her would be affected by her story. That’s exactly what she did. She “lives on” every time someone is inspired by her hope and courage. The quote from the poet really makes sense. What he means is that he never stood up for anyone when he wasn’t being directly affected by the situation. So that by the time he needed someone to be there for him, no one was left. He hadn’t saved anyone when he could have and then there was no one to save him.

Student #19 The first quote made me think that authors, great authors, go on living after they die. Every time someone reads their words they’re alive again. Anne wanted to be remembered, looked up to. She thought that if she could write well enough then people would always remember her. She never got the chance to write what she wanted to, but she wrote her diary so well that she does live on. She lives in the text.
The second quote made me realize that when you think something is wrong, speak out against it. It says that they never spoke out because it didn’t affect them, but when it did, they couldn’t; and no one was there to stand up for them. If you want people to stand up for you stand up for them. In the quote it went from communists to socialist and trade unions to Jews. If a group of people who weren’t affected had spoken out it might not have gotten that far and then there would be no need for someone to speak out for them. You never know though because it didn’t happen. People were too afraid to do anything other than wear paperclips. I know we think this was great but was it? Could they have done more? Some say they would’ve been killed, but if there was enough of them they could have teamed up with the allies and then it would not be possible for the Nazis to kill them. I think that the Nazis should have been stopped sooner and if more people had spoken out then it would have been possible.
Responses to Student #19:
1. I agree. With an author I would always want to be remembered though my work. That is some of my best work because it was made into a book so it must be good. I would love to be remembered through that.
Student #20
I think that Anne did live on through her diary and so did many people through their writing.

Student #21 I think that quote one means that Anne wanted to write in her diary so good that people in the future could read it and remember her, and the things she and here family went through. Quote one reminded me of all the times Anne went and wrote in her diary while we were reading the play. She wrote about everything while she was in hiding, but that’s probably why her diary turned out to be so famous.
To me, quote two meant that the German’s were going to get rid of everyone that was against them and their ways. They thought that getting rid of the people against them would be the easiest way of solving all their problems. Quote two made me think of how the German’s would go and tear places apart looking for Jews and other people they could put in the camps.
Responses to Student #21:
1. I didn't think that Anne was regerring to her diary. She didn't know she was going to die. She wanted to write other things. If you wrote a diary would you want people to read it if you were still alive? Anne didn't expect to die and even if she did I doubt she wanted people to read her diary. She probably didn't think the writing in it was very good. What I believe she wanted was to write a book or something like that so that people would always remember her. I believed something else totally about question two and if you want to know what go and read it. (19)
2. I agree with you and Anne's hopes came true.#20
Student #22I think Anne’s quote means that she wants to write so well that people will remember her even after she’s gone. I think Anne knows that this tragedy is going to be a big part of history someday, and people are going to want to know. They’re going to want to know what it was like, the emotions, the fear. She wants her and he story to be remembered so that people can learn from what happened. The second quote could mean a couple of things. I’m kind of confused on the real meaning, but here goes. It could mean that the person thought what the Nazis were doing was wrong, but since he wasn’t one of the groups being eliminated , he didn’t say anything. After the Nazis went through all the groups of people, they finally picked on the group he was in. By that time, there was no one to speak out for him because everyone was gone, or there was no one to speak out for him because he didn’t speak for them.
Responses to Student #22:
1. The second paragraph makes more sense now from what u explained thanks! (8)
2. I agree with your response. I thought that’s a good point when you said that Anne probably knew this event would be a big part of history. I also think that the second quote could have several different meanings. (21)
3. You said that you didn't really understand the second quote bu ti think you hit it perfectly. I agree completely and the way you phrased it was very clear. Good Job! (17)
