QUESTION
Today, I asked you to think about the following three terms:
*Prejudice – an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
*Hate – to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward; detest.
*Stereotype – ideas held by some individuals about members of particular groups, based solely on membership in that group. They are often used in a negative or prejudicial sense and are frequently used to justify certain discriminatory behaviors.
1. What do you think these three terms have in common, or how are they linked?
2. Explain how these three terms relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank.”

Student #2 All three of these terms are alike. All their of them represent negative things that people usually do towards other people. It makes me so sad to think of all the things the people In the concentration camps went through. Kids younger then me having to part with there family and not no what will happen to them. I don’t think that I could do that.

All of these terms are linked in many different ways. Prejudice and Stereotype both have something to do with labeling people. Prejudice people look at you, and automatically categorize you by your looks, or heritage. The word hate is pretty strong as well. If you hate someone, then you dislike them as much as possible...whether or not you know them. A stereotype is like an idea. For example, someone looks at a blonde girl and automatically stereotypes her saying she must be stupid because she is blond. All of these terms connect to the "Diary of Anne Frank" because they all relate to how the Jews were treated during this time period. The Germans didn't even know someone personally, but if they were wearing a yellow star, they were automatically prejudiced and they would instantly stereotype them and say they hate them because they are Jewish.
Responses to Student #4:
1. I agree with you. They are linked in many ways like how prejudice and stereotype are labeling people randomly. Hate is a very strong word and I don’t think people should use it so freely, unless they mean it. I like your way of how they relate to Anne Frank. The Jews were hated by the Germans and stereotyped right away. I always wonder why they had a certain prejudice against Jews.
~#6~
2. I also agree with you. Even though we don’t kill others with the warrant of stereotypes anymore doesn’t mean we have stopped stereotyping all together. (#20)
3. I agree with you about prejudice and stereotyping both having to do with labeling people and how hate is such a strong word. Few of us have probably felt real hate. I also agree with you about these have to do with labeling people even if we don’t know them. That is a big piece of being prejudice or stereotyping. I also agree with you that it relates to how the Jews were treated during Anne’s time. #17
4. I agree it wasn't fair to Jews who were instantly stereotyped because of their religion. $tud*nt #24!
5. #23 I agree with your ways of linking the words. Hate IS a very strong word, I agree strongly! I didn't think of the stereotype is like an idea thing, but if you think about it, it sort of is. Good job relating "The Diary of Anne Frank" and the terms, it made a lot of sense.

I think these three words have EVERYTHING do with Anne Frank, if not the WHOLE holocaust. These words are linked because some people have a “prejudice” against Jews, who have a different “stereotype”, and since they are different from some other Germans, they start to “hate” them. But I don’t believe any of this, so please don’t have a “prejudice” against me, because I would “hate” that.
Responses to Student #5:
1. you make an excellent point about the fact that all of the words relate to the holocaust because in all reality they do.- student 12

All three of these terms have to do with disliking a certain kind of person. Prejudice could be hatred, hatred is disliking, and stereotyping is thinking of someone in a group before you even get to know them, mainly in a bad way. They relate to Anne Frank because the Germans had prejudice against the Jews because they thought Jews were stupid and hated them so much that they wanted to kill them without their opinion on it. The Germans strongly hated the Jews. They also stereotyped them without even getting to know them.
Responses to Student #6:
1. I completely agree with you. That is a great connection between the three words and how they are all alike. Also, your connection on howthis relates to "The Diary of Anne Frank" is a good one because it makes perfect sense. Student #19

I think what the terms prejudice, hate, and stereotype have in common are that all of them are used in terms of saying bad things or not very nice things about some people. Like prejudice is an unfavorable opinion about someone without actually knowing them so it was like the Nazis and Green Police feeling a wave of dislike towards the Jews even though they didn’t know why they should dislike Jews. The Nazis didn’t even really get to know the Jews. They kind of just didn’t like them. Hate is to really, strongly, dislike someone and I’m guessing that most Jews said this about maybe Hitler, the Nazis, and the Green Police. Or maybe the Nazis said this about the Jews too. Either way, it has to do with “The Diary of Anne Frank” because she said, “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.” So even though many people probably hated the Nazis, Anne believed that they had good in them. For the stereotype part, it means that some people don’t know other people that well and just instantly think that some person is nice or that person looks mean so he must be mean. I think it relates to the text because the Jews were forced to wear the Star of David on their clothing and so whenever people saw them, they would automatically think, “Oh, that person is Jewish so I must not talk to them or be nice to them.” But all these have to do with Anne Frank beceause they're probably all things that were thought towards the Jewish during that time.

Student #12 I think that hate, prejudice, and stereotype are all linked and alike because they are all pretty negative things. They are about someone else. For example you could hate someone and you could be stereotypical because of what someone else did or how they acted. Also prejudice could be because of the way someone dressed or how they looked. All of these terms relate to the diary of Anne Frank because both Hitler and the Jews had a great hatred for each other, they both were a little stereotypical (this is more so true to Hitler and the Germans, and they both had a prejudice against the other with out ever knowing the other person.

Student #13 I think these three words are alike because they all have to do with labeling people in a bad way. Just because some people are a certain way doesn’t mean that that entire race is that way. I think that this has to do with Anne Frank because the Germans were prejudice against the Jews. It was unfair to the Jews.
Responses to Student #13:
1.I agree with you 100% about being prejudice to the Jews and how it was unfair.
(#15)
Student #14 I think that these three things are linked because they all have to do with the way you perceive somebody. Usually when you see somebody you tend to think something of them whether it is bad or good. You are stereotyping and if it’s bad than you are being prejudice. Even though you know nothing of the person’s character you automatically hate them just off looks. These things connect to The Diary of Anne Frank because just by seeing the star on the persons coat they hated them and thought no good thoughts of them and they could be they best people in the world but just them being Jewish throws all of that stuff.
Responses to Student #14:
1. I think this is a very well done entry. I agree with you all the way. However much I don't want to admit it, I must day I have judged people without getting to know them. If only the Nazis tried to understand the Jews. Great job connecting the three words. #18
Student #15
One thing that all of these have in common are all going against other people. They all downgrade them and don’t do any good for anyone. I think they relate to Anne Frank because the Nazi’s were stereotyping the Jews by thinking that they are worthless and they were willing to take there life. The other 2 words do this also because the Nazi’s hated the Jews and they were prejudice towards them.
Responses to Student #15:

Student #16 Well I think that hate, stereotype, and prejudice are linked because you basically hate someone if you stereotype them and prejudice is also stereotyping because when you stereotype it’s because you most likely don’t know anything about them. This related to Anne frank because the germens hated the Jews and put them into groups which was stereotyping and the fact that they were judging them before they knew nothing about them and they just decided to kill them.
Responses to Student #16:
1. I agree, if you stereotype before you get to know them, that is prejudice. And I don't think that they just decided to KILL them just because they were different, but just because they were doing Hitler's orders. §tudent #5

I think the thing these three things have in common is judgment. Prejudice means that you’re judging someone because of rumors, propaganda, or other things you’ve seen and heard before you even know the real thing or have seen it. Hate is a way you judge people. You can see someone different than you or that you are prejudice towards and classify them as someone you would hate or do hate even if you have never met them. Although many people don’t actually have or have ever felt true hate. When you stereotype someone you are classifying them into a generic group even though you have never met them. These terms relate to the Diary of Anne Frank because during the time that se was alive people were prejudice against the Jews. The Jews were thought to be inferior or not as good by the Germans. They judged all the Jews and killed many during the Holocaust.
Responses to Student #17:
1. I agree with the judgement thing and that prejudice means that you’re judging someone because of rumors
2. This is a great response, I didn't say it in my response, but I agree, everything invloves judgement. I wrote the exact same things in my response on prejudice in the Holocaust. This is a perfect response. I don't think anyone has felt real hate before either. Good Job. #31
Student #18 Prejudice, hate and stereotype have a lot to do with Anne’s life. Stereotypes flew left and right for Jews. They were made to look filthy, unworthy, and useless. The Nazis tried to convince the Christians that the Jews should just be gotten rid of. Because of all these stereotypes some of the non- Jewish people were prejudice against the Jews. This was without knowing that they were really nice. I think it is kind of like the people that did the paperclip project; they had No Jews, Catholics, and hardly any African Americans, or Hispanics in their school. I’m not saying they are bad or anything, but they might/ could have (had) about these groups. Like I said, it probably not meant to be mean, they simply just don’t understand. The last word, hate, is really strong. I think this was mostly the Nazis toward the Jews. Especially Mr. Hitler himself. The fact that he had the need to demolish and entire religion tells you something about hate. I think that many Jews hated the Nazis and Hitler for killing them and making them go into hiding. However, this didn’t apply to Anne. She felt that everyone must have some good in them.

Student #19 I think that all three of these words, prejudice, hate, and stereotypes, are all related because they describe feelings about people who are different. Also, these theree wrods are saying that people are bad because they study a different religion or something. They dont like them because they are different either because they are from a different country or have a different religion. This relates to "The Diary From Anne Frank" because Hitler thought that if people studied a different religion then him they were different and he believed that they should not live, so he killed them.
Responses to Student #19:
1. (# 26) I thought the same thing about Hitler and the Jews.

Responses to Student #20:Prejudice, hate, and stereotypes are connected by their negative meanings. When these three things combine and grow to terrifying proportions, things like the holocaust can happen. This can sometimes lead to the extermination of races, religions, etc. What sickens me the most is that a man like Hitler can slaughter millions just because of their faith. There is no reason for such a barbaric act to take place just because of ones beliefs. These three awful words relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because they were the three main perspectives of the holocaust.
1.#14 I totally agree. I never thought of it in the fact that it could wipe out whole races, religions, and believes. I mean I knew that’s what happened in the Holocaust but even today if a big leader didn't like a certain race then they could take them out. You should never judge a book by it's cover. These issues are very scary.

Student #23 They are all linked because they are very hateful terms, and all relate to what people do. Prejudice and stereotype are used to label people; all these terms are used very strongly and usually in a hateful way. These term prejudice relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because the Germans don’t like the Jews, just because of their religion. They chose not to look at them as people and just at their religion. Although they had no reason, they treated them horribly and sent them to concentration camps. The term hate relates to “The Diary of Anne Frank” also because Adolf Hitler hated anybody that was different then him. Because of this he got all the people that were of his religion on his side and to discriminate the Jewish. This resulted in the Jewish hating Adolf Hitler and his followers, because of the Jewish hating Germans and there vial actions. The last term stereotype relates to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because although the Germans had not even known the Jewish they held bad ideas about there religion in there head just because of the head of their group. I believe that these three terms should be banished from our vocabulary, they are used negatively and hurt many people. Without them, it might lean us towards a better community with nicer people. : )

Student #24 ~To start with prejudice is very much related to hate because to hate is your opinion. The Holocast was held against jews because Hitler hated them anyone obviously could think what they want with their own opinion. The reason that this was all caused was because Hitler had stereotyped jews as people who were like animals and had no right to live.~ ''

Student #26 All those words are connected because they are a negative way of labeling people. You can stereotype a group of people to all be a certain way and hate them because ther're like someone else you don't like. I think this applies to Anne Frank because the germans steroetyped and were prejudice against the Jews. They also hated the jews because they were different.

Student #31 These terms are very closely related. If you have prejudice against a person, you might dislike them without knowing them. You might dislike them because you stereotyped them, maybe you knew his dad was stupid, and so you assumed he was stupid. Your prejudice against people that way, which you stereotyped, might involve hate because you hate people in that persons family. The Holocaust is totally close to this topic. All the Germans might have prejudice against the Jews. German people could have stereotyped the Jews, thats why they HATED them. I think that all those things are unfair.
