QUESTIONS FOR SECTION 4 -- QUESTION 6 QUESTION:

In Act 2, Scene 1, Anne tells Peter, “We have problems here that no other people our age have ever had.” What are some of the problems that people your age have today? Are any of them problems that people your age have never had before? Explain.

Student #1 Most of the problems that kids our age have today are ones that people have been having for a long, long time. Some of these include struggling with school, not getting along with family members, and not "fitting in". However, nowadays there are problems that kids back then didn't need to face. As most of the other students pointed out, body image had never been such a big deal until recently. All of a sudden, both men and women had these "perfect images" that they needed to fit into. It's not only natural beauty, either. The right clothes need to be worn, your hair needs to look a certain way, and you have to have an impossibly fit body. Everyone seems to be pressured into trying to match up to this, and those who don't are sometimes even shunned and criticized. Other problems we have today are ones that people a long time ago probably never experienced either. Printers jamming, not making the varsity basketball team, and missing your favorite television show are just naming a few. But these problems are just minor ones that don't impact our lives very much.

Student #3 Kids have a lot of problems today. Some big ones are things like peer pressure, moving, or family problems such as divorce. Kids are also trying to do well in school and think that they should look a certain way and stuff too.All of this puts lots of stress on kids our age. None of them are problems that kids haven't had to deal with before though. A problem that kids havn't had to deal with yet could be 9/11 and the war in Iraq.

Responses to Student #3

1. I agree with you on the 9/11 thing. My cousin was almost sent to Iraq, and his family and my family were all stressing out about it. Luckily he wasn't sent over seas, but I can see how it would be extremely stressfull if it was someone even closer to you. (11)

Student #7 I think that a problem is that girls think they need to be skinny and boys need to be more musculer! That put alot of pressure on us these days because we have to look a certin image! Mostly oyu should just like oyur self for who you are and nots whats iin the outside!!!!!!! sinerly#7

Responses to Student #7:

1. *~15~* but if they have to look a certain way, then why not just look how the way you are suppose to look for you, being an individual.

2. Yes! I totally agree. It's what's on the inside that counts :)

Student #8 -Kids our age have a lot of problems in their life. Some of the problems they have are divorce from their parents, and have to keep good grades in school by doing other activities, trying to stay with friends, and trying to keep a good relation ship with them. When kids are going through this trouble, they are getting a lot of stress and frustration. In the story they have these problems, but they are not as serous. For example trying to stay with friends is a problem in the story because Anne and Peter can’t go out side and see their friends.

Student #9- A lot of people think they have to be a certaian way, like skinny, pretty, and all this other stuff. Some people take those kinds of things way too far and they can lead to anorexia or bolemia. Also maybe plastic surgery that could completley ruin your image rather than save it. Also, a lot of people have a problem with gossip and rumors. Those kinds of things need to stop and people need to think about how its hurting not only other people, but themselves as well.

Responses to Student #9:

1. thats very true but that didnt just start in are generation

Student #11- I think people our age are very much pressured to be the best. Whether it’s sports, academically, or just who has the most friends. Another big problem is your image. Girls need to be skinnier, and guys need to be more muscular. I think this is getting a little out of hand. We see all this pictures in magazines and on TV and we all know that pretty much all of the pictures are digitally edited to make them look “perfect”, but everyone still thinks they need to be like that. These problems have been going on since Barbie and Ken were created. If a woman was like Barbie, she would probably fall over, and even though there are guys that are more muscular than a Ken doll, they spend there whole life working on that, they aren’t just born like that.

Responses to Student #11:

1. I agree with you. Image is a big issue, especially to people our age. It can be extremely stressful to kids if they think that they have to look like the Barbie and Ken dolls. (3)

2. I like how you mentioned that the pictures in the media aren't exactly real pictures. The body image issue can really hurt people's self esteem. (1)

Student #12

to do drugs.

Responses to Student #12:

1.#21: I agree. Because most peolpe back then didn't make a big deal out of drugs like kids today.

Student #13 Kids our age have problems with grades and sports. Kids try really hard to make it on sports teams and might not make it. We also have problems with grades beacause we might get grounded if we get bad grades. It is a lot of pressure to get sraight A's. I don't really know any problems we haven't delt with yet.

Responses to Student #13:

1. (12) that is true!

Student #14- Kids our age in our generation have to constantly fight pressure. Not air pressure, but peer pressure. It occurs everyday and at every moment. There is pressure to be cool, and popular, as well as the pressure from parents, teachers, and sports coaches to be the best or the smartest. There is pressure to be skinny, to hurt your body or get high. Tons of kids resist it. I do, my friends do but some people can't; that or they get addicted. I really want this pressure to go away, but it probably won't anytime soon. The only ways that it stops is if everyone is the same (and that is where Uglies comes in).

Responses to Student #14:

1. I agree with you, there is a lot of pressure on kids these days but I think there has probably always been at least some. I have never read the "Uglies" series so I wouldn't know how that relates. I think because kids are learning in school or at home what drugs or smoking can do to you, that they might be able to resist the pressure easier. (17)

Student #15 Death in the family, moving schools, leaving the state. Um, I would say that most people my age had at least one or two of the problems I mentioned.

Responses to Student #15:

1. Hello #15, death in the family is a problem to!!!!

Student #16 Most girls and guys think that looking a certain way will make them look cooler. However most of the clothes that they consider "cool" are very expensive. You don't have to look a certain way to be popular and cool. -Oh and if your reading this *Hi Mr. Falkowski!*

Responses to Student #16:

1. Yeah, too many people are worrying about their image way too much. Kids don't need to worry that much about it. #13

Student #17 I think that people our age face quite a few problems! One problem is how people think our image should be. People read magazines or see models look skinny and gorgeous or muscular and they think that is how they should look but really those models and actors or actresses usually don’t look like that! They wear tons of makeup and people today can change a person’s appearance with computers. This problem has been around for a good while. Another problem is peer pressure. There is a lot of pressure on us and it will probably get worse. There is the pressure to do drugs and smoke and we just have to stand our ground and say “no”! There is also pressure on us to do good and give 100%! This is usually good but just don’t knock yourself down if you try your best and don’t do so good, just keep on trying or ask for help. Another problem is our tempers. We have to learn to control ourselves and not hurt people’s feelings. We need to talk calmly and learn to forgive. Most of these problems, I am guessing, have been around for awhile but we are still faced with them and we really need to learn how to deal with them well!

Responses to Student #17:

1. -I have to agree with you when you say that there is a lot of peer pressure in the world and we do have to work around it and so do Anne and Peter.(8)

Student #18 Some of the things us kids have to deal with is the Iraq war which is much more unique than any other war before it. Drugs are also more available than they've ever been before, and we have to withstand peer pressure if something bad is offered to us.

Responses to Student #18:

1. Student #17 is right, kids are pressured to look a certain way which causes kids to turn to dangerous things to change the way that they look.

Student #19

A lot of the girls my age have tons of very stupid problems in middle school but so do some of the boys in my grade. A lot of the problems are boyfriend girlfriend related because people are so stuck up. That is the main problem so i would say most problems are alike.

Student #21-I think kids now days have to deal with divorce. More than 50% of all married couples end up getting divorced. I is hard for a kid to concentrate when he can always see both of his parents aroud.
