QUESTION
Today, I asked you to think about the following three terms:
*Prejudice – an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason.
*Hate – to dislike intensely or passionately; feel extreme aversion for or extreme hostility toward; detest.
*Stereotype – ideas held by some individuals about members of particular groups, based solely on membership in that group. They are often used in a negative or prejudicial sense and are frequently used to justify certain discriminatory behaviors.
1. What do you think these three terms have in common, or how are they linked?
2. Explain how these three terms relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank.”
*All definitions taken from: www.dictionary.com
Student #1 Stereotypes are totally untrue when you're looking at a race, religious group, etc. as a whole. You can't label every single person in a group; everyone's different! When people are exposed to stereotypes, they can become prejudiced and be quick to judge. Especially if you weren't brought up with a lot of diversity, it can be hard not to be prejudiced. Hearing stereotypes and being prejudiced can lead to dislike, annoyance, and even hate. Though it can be hard to imagine hating an entire group of people, prejudice has led to this. During Anne Frank's time, the Nazis and Hitler were very prejudiced and stereotyped all Jews and saw them as inferior. It seems like they did in fact hate all Jewish people and had no respect for them.

1. i agree even thoe he didnt know most of them (23)

Student #3 If you stero type a group of people you think that they all act and think the same way. Whole races and religions are often stereo typed! If you don't like the way that you think they act and think then you may start to become prejudiced against them. That may lead to hate. This is what Hitler and the Nazis were extremely prejudiced against and they stero typed the Jews. All of that eventually led to the Nazis hate of the Jews that we read about in Anne Frank's Diary.

Student #7 I think that all these terms mean that your judging a book by its cover. The words are so people might look at each other and judge them for their hair color or how fat or thin they are. Those words mean alot there nasty words to use against each other but sometimes people can't help saying "she's got ugly hair or he's short" it mostly natural. I think everyone deserves a chance!!! These word repesent when Anne and her family were being judge by the religion path they choose.
Responses to Student #7:
1. I agree because no one should be made fun of. They can't help the way they are.
2. (12) me to!
Student #8-Stereotype are often related to prejudice because when some talks to some else and they use a stereotype the person they are talking to might get a bad opinion about those people and that person might be prejudice to that certain group. When someone has a bad opinion about a person or a group, they might to start to hate each other over time. These three terms relate to The Diary of Anne Frank because the Jews will have stereotypes about the Germans and the Germans might be prejudice against the Jews. The reason why the Jews hate the Germans is because they just think of the German soldiers and not the civilians. The reason why the Germans hate the Jews is because they are prejudice against Jews.
Responses to Student #8:
1. *16* I was thinking the same thing about the Jews and Germans.
2. ;)#7*** me too everyone should get a chance in life i mean you only have 1!!!!
Student #9- Basically, the three terms all mean some sort of hatred (of course hate). They all have some sort of "meanness" I guess you could say. It's really hard to explain, but no one deserves hatred, being stereotyped, or prejudice. These three terms relate to the story of Anne Frank, because first of all, for hatred, of course, Hitler hated the Jews. Stereotype would have to do with the fact that Hitler stereotyped the Jews, thinking they were horrible people. It seems to me that prejudice and stereotype are a lot alike, so I would say the same for prejudice.
Responses to Student #9:
1. I agree that all three terms mean the same thing, and that no one deserves to be treated that way. (11)

Student #11- I don’t think it matters what the exact definition of prejudice or stereotype is. It has to do with hate, weather it is just an opinion that you keep inside or you act upon. It is extremely unnecessary, but it is always here. If you are prejudiced against a race, or you stereotype them as “dumb”, “mean”, or anything else, you obviously wouldn’t even try to get to know them which are easily linked to hate. If you hate someone, or even think you “strongly dislike them” you will not give a chance to see them as a person, not a race or religion. In Anne’s time Hitler didn’t “strongly dislike” the Jews, he downright hated them. He didn’t give any of them, individually, a chance. He stereotyped all Jews, but I’m not sure what bases he was doing that on.
Responses to Student #11:
1. I totally agree!! xoxo#7
2. I agree about getting to know someone first and not stereotyping them! Hitler was wrong to do so! I think that you are right about the hate thing and that the definition doesn't matter so much!(17)
Student #12
they are linked because they all mean the same thing.

Student #13 These definitions all are in common because they all give negative thoughts about a certain person. These relate to The Diary of Anne Frank because people stereo typed nazis and the nazis hated the Jews.
Responses to Student #13:
1. I pretty much agree with you, but I also want to add that the Nazis stero typed the Jews as well. (3)
Student #14- Prejudice and stereotypes both have to do with labeling a person, or their beliefs. Hatred can come from strong feelings of stereotypes or prejudice and the person is too stubborn to take a deeper look at the victim. The Nazis hated the Jewish community. Hitler created negative stereotypes about the Jews and that caused the German followers to become prejudice. The whole non-Jewish country then saw eye to eye with the beliefs of Hitler. Unjust beliefs. Anne, her family, her Jewish friends, the Jewish faith, Auschwitz's survivors, and Jewish people all around Europe were crushed mentally and physically because of the hatred of one man. It all started with a point of a finger; one evil man and prejudice. It caused pain then, and there is still pain today. There always will be.
Responses to Student #14:
1.*~15~* I agree! With the point of a finger it made the Jews seem bad, to bad to be in the community with Germans. That hasn’t changed; some Germans still hate Jews. But maybe one day, every German didn’t hate the Jews.
Student #15-Prejudice involves that if they don’t know what to do they sort of ignore it. Hate means they don’t like it, and stereotype means you judge someone or something with out knowing who they are, or their religion. In all three, they don’t like something or someone or a group of people.
They were stereotypes in the story, the Jews had to wear stars, because Hitler didn’t like Jews. Hitler hated the Jews. Although the Jews didn’t know why.
Responses to Student #15:
1. I'm also wondering about that! I have no clue why Hitler would hate Jews. Maybe he had a bad experience with some. (1)
2. Hitler hated the jews because when he was little he wanted to go to an art school but they wouldn't expect him because he wasen't Jewish!!! ***#7****
Student #16 No one should be given a stereotype. You shouldn't judge anyone by how they look, how they talk or what religion they are. All of the people in the World that give people labels like "Oh I don't like your clothes I'm giving you this label, or "Why do you talk that way? I'm giving you this label." It could go on an on. Stereotypes could cause a friend to hate someone because of what they think they are even though that person could be the complete opposite.
Responses to Student #16:
1.(21) I agree. People have lost close friends because of things like that. It is not good.
Student #17 I think prejudice, hate, and stereotype are all related to each other because they are usually against people or a group and they don’t like them for some reason. People do this even though some people may have some things in common, they are still not the all the same! Different people, have different feelings or thoughts about things even though they may like one thing the same! Hate is a strong word but some people are so prejudice that they may hate someone or some people and that may cause the other person to hate them back. These words relate to “The Diary of Anne Frank” because the Nazis stereotyped the Jews and were very prejudice to them and Hitler killed millions of them just because he was prejudice and he hated them but that caused the Jews to be scared and some of them probably hated him.

Responses to Student #18: Those three words are connected by the way that they are all always directed at somebody or some group of people. They relate to the Diary of Ann Frank because the family of the secret annex was stereotyped and hated and was predjudiced by the Nazi's and some of the German people.
1. I agree with #16, people shouldn't be stereotyped or hated just because of their religion.
Student #19
All of these terms give people reasons to hate other people that they dislike for no good reason. Hate is not liking a specific person for one reason or another. These terms are related to the diary of anne frank in many ways, Dussel and Mr.Vandaan's relationship just to name one reason.

Student #21-I believe that The three topics all show that u do not approve the thing you are making fun of. And because of that you either dislike them, make up stuff about them, and to hurt them emotionallly and physically. The people that do these things are dispicible. This relates to Anne Frank because the Nazi's, each ad everyone of them, had these traits.

Student #22- 1. I think that stereotype, hate, prejudice all have to do with disliking someone, something, or a group.
2. I think that they related to the book because the Nazi’s all stereotyped the Jews, and the Jews were prejudice and hated the Nazi’s.
Responses to Student #22:
1. I also agree with you because the Jews and the Nazis hate each other. (8)
Student #23
those three things all have to do with each other they all make everyone feel bad this was related to the text by hittler hated jews that he didnt even know but nowadays its differnt alot of people thing if your german your a nazi and hate jews but thats not always the case.
