QUESTION
We are about to finish the movie, "Paper Clips."
1. Share to two details you learned from this documentary that had the most impact on you.
2. Did "Paper Clips" help you to further understand "The Diary of Anne Frank?"
Student #1 One thing about the movie "Paper Clips" that really impacted me was that some people sent in boxes and boxes of paperclips. When the students were pouring the paper clips into tubs, you could see that there were cardboard boxes full of unopened paperclip containers. It's great that people want to support them, but it doesn't really stand for much if you just send in a ton of paperclips. Those who gave a few paper clips that represented people they knew that died in the Holocaust are the ones that put true meaning into the project. Another detail that impacted me was that only about half the people Hitler killed were Jews. I've never really thought about the gypsies, homosexuals, etc. that were also murdered in the Holocaust. For the longest time, I thought it was only Jews who were affected! When survivors of the Holocaust were telling their stories, I could actually imagine what condition they were in. In "The Diary of Anne Frank", I couldn't really sense any emotion by the way we were reading it. "Paper Clips" helped me understand what the victims were going through.
Responses to Student #1:
1. I agree that the people who sent just one paper clip for a specific person meant more, but I do think that the people who sent a bunch of paper clips still stood for something. They will never know what could have happened if all the people weren't killed. One of those people could have been a grandparent of someone who could be a great person, but now know one will ever know because of Hitler and the Nazi's actions. (11)

Student #3 One thing I learned that impacted me was that people from all over the world sent paper clips to honor the people that were close to them and died during the holocaust. I didn't know that a project that started out so small could end up being a world wide thing. I also learned that eleven million people died. I thought that it was mostly Jews. I didn't realize that there were five million gypsies and other groups of people were also killed. A third thing that really impacted me was the one about the guy and his family being separated. He and his brother went one way and his mom and other brother went a different day and were murdered. I can't imagine how that would feel. It would be so, so sad! Watching the movie "Paper Clips" did help me understand The Diary of Anne Frank better. The movie showed me a little bit about what life in a concentration camp was like. Seeing the surrvivors talk about their stories showed me all of the emotion. Now I can really see why it was necessary for Anne and her family to go into hiding and why being caught was a constant fear on everyone's mind.
Responses to Student #3:
1. I think that your right about it being so sad and emotional. I didn't know that eleven million people were killed either, I just thought that it was Jews. I also think that it was really cool how just one school could make such a big project and memorial! I thought the brother and dad being split up from his mom and other brother was really sad and it showed me that Hitler didn't care about you or your family and how you felt if you were a Jew.(17)

When we watched the movie I couldn’t believe how they treated the Jewish, putting them in concentration camps and stripping off their cloths and putting them in the gasses. I thought the movie helped me understand Diary Of Anne Frank a lot better because it made me understand why the Jewish wanted to run away so bad. The movie made me get a feel of how bad the holocaust really was.

Student #7 The Paperclips movie totally made me undrstand the Diary of Anne Frank because all those paperclips were all the people and how Anne was one of those 6,000,000 million people who died and the suffering they went thourgh. I know how the that exprince was probably horrible because it's a cruel and evil thing to do to the jewish people. i could not believe that they colected all those paper clips and more then they wanted. It was awesome that they got a german train car and put all those paperclips in it!!!!
Responses to Student #7:
1.I also agree with you, because it was an amazing thing that the people did at that middle school. (8)
2.)It made me understand the story a lot better too! (#4)
Student #8-The two things that really had an impact on my life was when a person would give them a paper clip and say it was for a certain person and all of the stuff that middle school did to collect the paper clips. When I watched Paper Clips it helped me understand stuff about The diary of Anne Frank. It helped me understand the feeling people had during the holocaust.
Responses to Student #8:
1. #14- The personal stories for sure are some of the most touching, and I agree completely that the single paper clips sent in by a loved one with a story mean so much. It really was something to see all of those paper clips and to see how many unfinished lives and dreams were killed because a group of people thought differently.
Student #9- Something that had the most impact on me was probably the pain that the Jews had gone through during the Holocaust. I didn’t realize that things could get so bad and how sad it would be to lose someone that you love. I think that the paper clip movie helped me to understand what Anne Frank went through because, just by hearing all the stories that those Holocaust survivors had to tell made everything seem like I was there. Just hearing about it was sad, and I can’t imagine how it would have been for them.
Responses to Student #9:
1. I also felt like I was there when the Holocaust survivors were talking. It was extremely sad, I don't know what I'd do if I were actually there. (3)

Student #11- I think two details from this document that impacted me most were the story when the one guy was sent one direction with his older brother and his mom and brother was sent another direction. I was thinking what that would that be like, and I can’t imagine that. My mom has always been there when I needed her, and to ask a guard where my mom was sent and he points to a smoke stack would have been a terrible feeling. Another thing that impacted me was the love that everyone sent with the paperclips they sent. Whether they sent it in remembrance of a friend, or just to support this project, every paper clip was there for someone who suffered. “Paper Clips” helped me understand "The Diary of Anne Frank". Before the video I understood the story, but that’s all it was, a story. Now after listening to the stories of the survivors and seeing how it affected them, it doesn’t seen like a story anymore, it seems more real.
Responses to Student #11:
1.*16* I feel the same way about the story. It doesn’t feel like just a story anymore.
2. ;0 #7 Me too about what # 16 said!!!!

Student #13 I couldn't believe they collected all of those paper clips and that 6 million people died in the Holacaust. It showed that the school really cared about what happened. I didn't really understand what the paper clips had to do with Anne Frank.
Responses to Student #13:
1. I know that was unbelieveable i want to that project dont you!! #7
Student #14- During the movie Paper clips, I really saw not only the pain of the victims, but the hope of new life. When the survivors of the Holocaust visited the children I almost started to cry. The viable pain in their faces and the verbal sadness in their speeches put me there with them when they were sent to the death camps. The smoke stacks. The smoke stacks of the crematory that Sam talked about when he asked the guard where his mother and brother were one of the most vivid details. He didn't know what they were, but they were the smoke from the fire that destroyed evidence of his mother's murder. He was too little to understand, so he had to stand there and witness the smoke with and origin oblivious to him. It was so terrible. Another detail that stood out was just the overall number of paper clips. Six million. Six million stories, six million souls, six million signs of peace, and six million symbols of recognition to out great lives. It definitely helped me understand more about the story of Anne Frank because it put me there and it put me into perspective.
Responses to Student #14:
1. *~15~* I know. How would you like it if you were one of the people that had to witness smoke coming from the crematory? I wouldn’t like it. How would you like to be one of the people in the crematory? No matter if you were in the crematory or you had to watch the smoke come out of the crematory, it doesn’t sound easy. 6 million people-that is how many suffered a horrible death. It help a lot to have see Paper Clips to help you understand The Diary of Anne Frank.
Student #15
That so many people were willing to give paper clips to people they didn’t know and were willing to tell the story of the person who had died really amazed me.
Not really because I understood a lot. But ‘Paper Clips’ helped me to realize that so many people had so different views. The Jews didn’t like the star they wore, and a lot of people didn’t like that they had survived and the rest of their family didn’t.
Responses to Student #15:
1.(21) I think that that makes alot of sense. I would not be able to live if my whole family had died.
Student #17 One thing I learned that impacted me was that people really want to help support the remembrance of the Holocaust and really get people to understand what happened how and many people were killed. So many people donated paperclips to the school to help them realized how many people were killed. I thought it was interesting that some people would send one paperclip for each person they knew or that was in their family and wrote letters telling them about it. Another interesting thing was that that this movie gave me more of a sense of how many people actually died and how the survivors felt about it. It helped me understand “The Diary of Anne Frank” more because the survivors made it more clear about how scared they were and how careful they had to be and it also explained about what happened at the concentration camps and how terrible they were.

Student #18 One thing that I learned was how those kids didn't no about the Holocoust before the project, I mean there's not a person I know that doesn't know about the Holocoust. Another thing was that people from all around the globe sent paperclips to this small town and that they managed to get so many paperclips. The movie helped me understand the Diary of Ann Frank more because it made me realize that if the people of the secret annex were sent to the concentration camps they would all probably die.
Responses to Student #18: I agree with #17 that the paperclips made people understand just how many people were killed in the Holocoust.

Paperclip helped me understand the position of the people in the diary of anne frank way better. That movie showed how desperite the jews were for mercy, just like the kids in that school were very desperite for paperclips for their big project.

Student #21- I thought how they colected four times too many paper clips was amazing. It really stood out to me that they found a rail car and made a beautiful memorial. I thought that the movie really didn't bring me closer because it wasn't all about the The Diary of Anne Frank. Infact it didn't mention it at all in the movie i don't think.
