QUESTIONS:
Here are a few quotes for you to consider. Read and think about them thoughtfully then craft a response regarding what they mean to you, what they make you think about, how they relate to you, etc.
1. In, "The Diary of Anne Frank," Anne states in Act II, Scene 3: "But ... and that is the great question ... will I ever be able to write well? I want to so much. I want to go on living even after my death."
2. Poet Martin Niemoller (1892-1984), wrote:
"First they came for the Communists, but I was not a Communist so I did not speak out;
Then they came for the Socialists and the Trade Unionists, but I was not one of them, so I did not speak out;
Then they came for the Jews but, I was not Jewish so I did not speak out.
And when they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."
Student #1 In the quote from Anne, I think she is trying to say that she wants to be remembered, and not just ''who'' she was. Anne wanted people to know how she felt and what she thought about things, even after she died. She felt that a diary would let her live on and not be forgotten. A lot of times, I have tried starting a diary or journal. I want to be able to look back several years from now and see what I was doing, thinking, and feeling. However, I've always ended up giving up; I don't think I have the discipline to write on a regular basis, and I get bored quickly. So then I wonder, is anyone going to remember me? I'm not sure, but I don't think so. I feel a lot like Anne does; I want to be able to write very much. The quote by Martin Niemoller was kind of hard to understand, but I think i got most of it. I believe he is trying to say that you have to stand up for what you believe in and not depend on other people to do it for you. If you don't speak your mind when you think something wrong is happening that affects other people, there isn't going to be people to help you in your time of need.
Responses to Student #1:
1. I also have tried to start a journal, but I failed at it. But I think I have done stuff so people will remember me.(8)
2. I agree that the quote by Martin Niemoller has to do with standing up for what you believe in, but you have more self discipline than I do. I have gotten journals and promised myself I would write in them, and never have. (11)

Student #3 I think what Anne is trying to say is that she wants people to remember who she was even after died. Not just her name, but who she was as a person. I would also like to have people remember me when I'm gone. I have kept a diary for as long as I can remember. It's fun to go back to my very first one and see what I was doing or how I was feeling on a particular day. I'm not positive about what the quote from Martin Niemoller was saying, but I'll take a guess. I think he was trying to say something like when other people need help you should try to stand up for them because if you don't then when you need help there will be no one to help you.
Responses to Student #3:
1. #13 You are right, that is exactly what she meant. She wanted to be remembered by what she accomplished. It would be nice to remembered for doing something great. The poet meant the nazis came for everyone and by the time they came for him, there was no one to speak out for him.

Student #7 I think it means that Anne wanted to do so much more and she didn't want ot die. I think that it's important to believe in your self to know who you are in life!!! One of my favorite qoutes is "Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning how to dance in the rain". You only have 1 life!!!!!!
Responses to Student #7:
1. #14- I love that quote because it is so true. Who's it by? It's talking about how waiting does no good, so you might as well be happy and take the risk. It says to turn bad into good. It reminds me of the quote, "When life hands you lemons, say, Hey I like lemons; what else you got?" by
Student #8-In the quote from Anne Frank, I think it means that she wants to be remembered for something that she was good at. For example she wanted to write well and she was a good writer and maybe she wanted to live through out her writing. The quote from Martin Niemoller means if you don’t stand up for someone then they won’t stand up for you. So if you do a good dead for someone then they will repay the favor.
Responses to Student #8:
1. That is what I thought Martin Niemoller meant. I think he was right about if you don't stand up for someone, then they probably won't stand up for you. I guess we sort of thought the same thing about what Anne meant but I thought she wanted to be remembered for doing the right thing and have her thoughts and feelings carried out forever.(17)
Student #9- The first quote I think means that after she dies, she wants to go to heaven. Not only that by she wants for people to find her diary maybe, so she can be remembered and live on in peoples memories, which is exactly what happened. The second quote maybe means that you should speak for yourself. Don't pretend to be someone your not because that will get you absolutely no where.

Student #11- I think Anne’s quote means that she doesn’t want to just be known by her family, because they all already know what she has gone through. I think she wants to be known by other people, who it could affect. I think by other people reading her diary, other will realize the struggle innocent people went through for believing what they want to believe. I think the quote by Martin Niemoller means that you can’t just wait for others to do stuff for you. You need to try, and even if you don’t reach your goal, you tried you best and you can’t do anything better.
Responses to Student #11:
1.*~15~* I agree. I think that ‘if life hands you lemons, you make lemonade’, meaning that if life hands you something, make something out of it. If life hands you something hard like dying for what you believe in, then write it from your point of view, of the people coming after you. You may just change someone’s life.

she wonts to wright good all the time.

Student #13 Anne Frank states she wants to go on living even after her death. She did, she was remembered and talked about for centuries. Poet Martin Niemoller stated that the nazis came after everyone during the Holacaust. It didn't matter who they were.
Responses to Student #13:
1.(21) I agree about the way that you viewed these two quotes.
Student #14- I think that Anne's quote was talking about how she really wants to accomplish something with her life. I think she wanted to be a journalist, but when she found out that she wouldn't be able to be one, she set a goal to try her best to make her writing tell of the Annex so that her "family" would rest in peace after perishing in the death camps. The poet, I think, was referring to how he was an observer when they came to kill the people. He regrets having not said anything because he was killed last. The others were gone, so there was no one speaking out to save him. They wanted badly to live, and I don't know many people who think otherwise.
Responses to Student #14:
1. I agree with just about everything you said! It seems like you can relate a lot to Anne and you understand what she's trying to say. What you thought about the poet was very thoughtful (1)
I agree.(24)

I want to be an author. And if you write something so inspiring, like The Diary of Anne Frank, your words inspire someone. Like in The Diary of Anne Frank how the last thing in her diary she wrote was ‘in spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart’. Anne Frank wanted to live on, even thou she had died. She will be remembered as people read her diary.
I think what Poet Martin Niemoller meant, was that even as the communists were being killed, he didn’t speak out that it was wrong. Even as the socialists and trade unionist were being killed, he still didn’t speak out that is was wrong. As the Jews were being killed, he still didn’t speak out that it was wrong. So with everyone killed, there was no one to speak out that killing him was wrong.

Student #16 The quote that Anne wrote means that she didn't want to be forgotten when she died. She thought that a diray would help people understand her story after she had died and it did.

Student #17 I think what Anne was trying to say was that she wants to be remembered and for people to understand what she thought and how she felt. I think Anne wanted to be remembered and thought of in the years to come. She might not have known it then, but she sets a good example because even when the Nazis were capturing Jews and killing them, she didn’t really hate them and she still thought that people are really good at heart. I think what Martin Niemoller was trying to say was that if you know something isn’t right and you don’t stand up for the people it is effecting just because it isn’t effecting you, then people won’t stand up for you when they know something isn’t right but it doesn’t effect them and it does effect you. I think he is trying to say if you know something is wrong, then stand up against it no matter who it effects.
Responses to Student #17:
1. *16* I agree.
Student #18 I think Anne meant that she wanted to be able to remember her past while writing her diary, and that her diary is very important to her. I think that the writer meant that someone needed to speak up about the Nazi's because if someone didn't stop them then they would keep going on about killing people for no reason.
Responses to Student #18: I think #14 had a good point saying that all Anne really wanted to do was accomplish something with her life.

These qoutes explain how jews needed to be let free because this whole thing with the Hollacaust was destroying all of the jews lives. It also explains how many people felt tons of pain for the jews knowing how bad the jews were treated at this time in Germany.

Student #21- The first one said that she wanted to have people remember her after she dies. She wants to live on in her diary and other peoples hearts. The other one says that she kind-of ignored the Nazi's because they weren't coming for her. She didn't have to speak out. But bye the time they came for her she couldn't do anything about it because of her procrastination.

Student #22-I only really know what the poem wrote by Martin Niemoller. I think that it means that he didn’t speak out to save all the other people (Jews, Communists, Socialists, and the Trade Unionists) so no one was left to save him when the Nazi’s came for him
